I just want to know when they will start manufacturing Kritter Keepers in ATTRACTIVE COLORS!!! My décor doesn't include neon green, pink or purple! (I know they come in black and white also but, YUCK!) I would LOVE to see Kritter Keepers with CLEAR lids.... if they did that, that would be the only enclosure I would buy. For now it's plastic shoeboxes at $1.37 each from Wallyworld. (When I have the energy to navigate their narrow asiles along with the other 2,000 people in the store!)

I cannot stand the neon colored kritter keeper tops either.......they used to be available in black, they have stopped making the black lids. I have a bunch of black lidded Kritter keepers stashed away in the garage and anytime I see any at a show I snap them all up.

There is an alternative brand called 'faunarium' that also comes in some of the terrestrial friendly dimensions, which are sold exclusively in a green so dark it is all but black unless viewed in the brightest light. The downside is, the plastic see-thru part is slightly smoked, but not to the extent that it would hide anything at all. Webbing shows up on it really strongly, as well.

Photo - Haplopelma lividum, that won't burrow anymore.. this cage dried out very fast, so I taped the top to keep in humidity.

Why do you use substrate? dont they fill it with eggs? I prefer a more controlled environment for my crickets, no substrate, more egg-crates, no water, some soil for the eggs....
More so than anything, cause it keeps it from getting so cruddy on the plastic. I thought I might get some eggs to hatch out but that hasn't been the case. I also think I pretty much heard of this setup on this board, somewhere.. Its been working out very well.

If you don't give your crickets water, how do you keep them alive?
Apples and oranges?

Thanks for the tips Prof. T & Morb. That was funny, Mebe! Vys seems to be a bit on the slow train and wears tight "chonies" ;) !

Peace, D

I use 1/2 gallon RubberMaid containers with holes poked in the sides. I fill them with peat and Vermiculite to about the top and then compress it down until it fills it about half way. It's about the same size diameter as a deli cup but it's deep enough that they don't run up my arm whenever I open it and it's big enough I can get my hand in it. Two of my slings are about 2 1/2 to 3" so it's not so tall that when they climb they get hurt if they fall.

hehehe, i just bought a black-topped kritter keeper from PetCo, so ha. :p i also have a lovely aqua and a lovely purple one. i too am picky. however, though my decor doesn't match, it keeps people from messing with them.

'what's that?' 'those are my T's.' 'oh...' (steps away, leery)

eeeeeeehehehe! :D

of course, then i feel badly and have to explain that they're actually very docile and friendly, get one out, offer to let them hold it as long as they sit on my bed or futon. i have two friends wanting Ts now. (grin)

however, i am furthering truth and knowledge and after all, that's what matters. ;)

for my crickets i keep them in a plastic tub with the sides 'scratched' with rough sandpaper with about a two inch smooth part at the top. this lets them climb and cuts down upon cannibalism considerably. i feed dry oats, oatmeal, cream of wheat, dried potato and use that as a substrate of sorts. it keeps things nice, clean, and dry. then i occasionally offer fresh veggies on a little plastic lid. keep a wet/moist sponge on a lid as well so it doesn't get on the bottom of the cage at all. then, i supplement with the little calcium cricket water thingies and armstrong cricket farms food. they LOOOVE that stuff, wow.

i get 1000 at a time as well and between my four geckos, beardie, and BTS, they last about a month...that's even with successful breeding...ack!
