Stunning mate,
I have a P.Ornata coming tuesday, 5cm, and wandered what you think about handling them from a young age so there "used to" being handled.
on the other hand, i also have an OBT coming, which i will not be handling :D
I would handle the OBT before the P. Ornata....ornata has much more potent bite!!

Hi,
i think i may try it then, the P.Ornata will be about the same size as yours with the OBT being 7-8cm so around 3"
Cheers, John

If the ornata is small....like 2"" holding it would be okay....but as a adult....I wouldn't!!!

Hi rob what does instar(s) mean?
How many molts they have had.
2nd instar they start feeding
1st instar they are eggs with legs.
0th instar they are eggs.
Ok, i made that last one up, but you get the point.
From Wikipedia:
An instar is a developmental stage of arthropods, such as insects, between each moult (ecdysis), until sexual maturity is reached. Arthropods must shed the exoskeleton in order to grow or assume a new form. Differences between instars can often be seen in altered body proportions or changes in the number of body segments. Some arthropods can continue to molt after sexual maturity, but these subsequent molts are generally not called instars.

For most insect species the term "instar" is used to denote the developmental stage of the larval or nymphal forms of holometabolous (complete metamorphism) or hemimetabolous (incomplete metamorphism) insects, but the term can be used to describe any developmental stage including pupa or imago (the adult, which does not molt in insects).

The number of instars an insect completes depends on the species and the environmental conditions. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity often slow the rate of development.

P. Ornata 3rd instar molting into 4th instar (time lapse)

Caught one of the 3rd instars in my colony finally molting into 4th instar (he was the last one!) so I decided to get a time lapse video. I noticed that some of the others in the colony hovered over him after he'd finished his molt and even took the molt away...odd behavior.

Here's the time lapse video:

Nice time lapse vid, I wish I could have seen the part where the other's came and took his exuvium away. I thought one of them was about to do it, but then he just went back down and hung out.

How big do the 4th instar's measure?

Yeah, I should have kept the camera going longer...I turned it off and was just checking the newly molted one out and one came up and did that...very interesting.

They are about 2" now...

P.ornata colony pics

I had to change the container for the ornata colony so I thought I'd get a few pics of them in their new home. They are now 5th instars and almost 3". They are doing well:
