I have seen it done and hear about how "evil" these guys are. Just got a sling from Ryan (talkenlate04) and think it is soo freaking cute. I am a little danger prone and the risk of getting bit doesn't deter me too much, but...
LOL, I would rather not find out. So i need to read the bite reports forr this one too.
Just wanting to hear form you all that have handled OBT and what happened.

They are very beautiful
Thanks Ryan!!!

I've handled 2 or 3 of mine, but it probably doesn't count since they're at about the 2" mark. They're a lot slower crawling around my hands and arms than running around the outside of their jars while I'm feeding them or doing some minor cage maintenance.

The only encounter I've ever had scared the crap out of me. I didn't get bit and I didn't feel the least bit threatened, but when it flew out of the vial at warp speed and scrambled all over my leg, it did about give me a heart attack!
That "sling" you're holding is gorgeous!!!

I am not holding that T and I wouldn't consider that a sling, it is just a pic i got off of the boards gallery. My sling is about 1-1 1/2".

You are the only one that can decide if you're ready. Shaky hands and nervousness makes for dangerous handling. Staying calm and confident, paying attention the spider, and its perfectly safe. Just know what you're doing, and remember, they DO jump.

That is good to know about OBT, I was not aware that they were jumpers!

I was holding my little 3/4" P Regalis last night and it was so cool. It did a little wiggle and scrunched up it's leggs, and POW jumped about 5-6" off my hand and them parachuted down to the ground. It was way cool, too bad I don't think I will be holding this one when it gets big. From what I have read the P. Regalis Bite is much worse than its bark.

I think that some species are defensive agains handling simply because they are preyed upon by creatures that pick them with their hands (primates, lemurs and of course humans). So try to bite an oncomming hand is actualy a survival reflex

Actually after reading through the bite reports I am not sure that I will attempt to handle this species. However I think if i read the bite reports on any species that I might have the same apprehension

Lol, its easy man.. don't get bit.:D

Its actually surprising how little biting occurs during handling, because *most* specimens are far less defensive once outside of their cage. But again, only giving you a little tip here, the choice is up to you to do it.

I've had ONE adult female that I could handle, the rest, I've never trusted. My biggest girl now is fast and furious. Getting ready for a presentation last year, she decided she wasn't going and ran behind the stove. I moved the stove and herded her back to the counter where she promptly went down the garbage disposal. I turned on the water, she climbed out, ran up the wooden spoon I was holding, tagged me and ran back to her enclosure. My fault of course, for stressing out an already defensive T, but all I can say now is be aware of the effects of the venom of the species you are handling!! Read the bite/sting reports. Know the individual well. NEVER handle a hot T when you are impaired, stressed or distracted in any way. And be prepared, I simply wasn't ready for the excruciating pain of this species' bite!

I have two OBTs, one full grown and one a juvie. I handled my juvie last week and was pretty impressed with how fast it was. I felt fine about it though and it showed absolutely no defensiveness towards me. They DO jump LOL just about like the avics do.

I know I will soon handle my adult OBT after that experience and anticipate n o problems. So when you are ready. go for it.

I'm considering handling my OBT juvie right now. She's about two inches and really chill as far as OBTs go, and i want to handle her so badly. I've yet to recieve a threat display from her, my main concern is her safety since she's pretty skiddish and seems to have a penchant for jumping. So long as you're prepared for the speed and the jumpiness, you should be ok, just carefully gauge her mood and you should be alright (at least, that's what i'm going on with mine). Best of luck.

Travis... i just have to say... you got this far into wanting to handle something w/o knowing what kind of venom it packs?

bad habit =P

LOL, I did read the bite reports and your was one of the one that spooked, and I must say I don't spook very easily!

Well for most People

Well for Most People I can see your point, however you just don't know me. I went to NW Inverts this weekend and saw their "chinese Giant Tigerlegs" Pede and had to fight back the urg to hold it(They probably would not have let me if I asked). I know, I know... I have a death wish. I think I am a little too facinated with these things. I am like a kid - I want to touch everything, I have been like this since I could walk. But I have learned to be very respecctful of the life forms I am curiously inspecting.

What I need to watch out for is my 6 yr old duaghter, she is the same as I in this respect, and i have had a problem with her holding our 6+ B. smithi with out letting me know and oh coarse watching. Don't get me wrong, i trust her with our Big Mamma, but I don't want her going and touching any of the others. So I have had the converstaion with her that she is not to touch the other T's cause Daddy doesn't even touch those ones, YET. I am thinking about building a locked display case this spring/summer. That would stop those worries, but then again if my daughter is really determined she would find a way. LOL. Don't think she would go there but I should build the case cause then i would have more room for extra T's.{D

er

don't get me wrong... i have probably been bitten and stung more than anyone else on the boards (except stagger-lee... another californian hehehe) and i absolutely love playing with my bugs

but... i did as much web research (and even some library trips) as possible before embarking on my little venom games. and there are some things i absolutely will not free handle. high potency buthid scorpions are real high on that list.

anyhow... i mean, especially if you got kids you need to do your own research. no offense, but it sounds like you haven't even bothered to read AB bite reports before thinking about playing with some fairly burly bugs. the fact that you have a kid that you can't trust to not get into bugs...

idk. the situation does not make me comfortable

i don't want to be a richard... but it really seems like you might want to rethink some stuff

I see what you are saying... I actually exaggerated a little bit, And i did read the bite reports, and even if I decide to not Free handle my bugs I will still keep them for displays. They are currently out of reach off little hands and are in there own containers within another container. Not really taking any risk in that respect.

Totally get where you are coming from, but I am not that irresponsible.
