I guess I'm pretty lucky due to the fact that Theraphosa hairs dont really bother me that much. Quite strange considering I have quite sensitive skin

To be honest, I probably would have went for the Apophysis anyway. A 1cm sling for £110 is pretty expensive, and quite a risky purchase. As I said before, I already have a sub adult girl, and plan to get a couple of female adults and start a breeding project. I've only ever seen one Apophysis for sale pysically, and only a few availible to the UK online. Blondi's are readily availible here, in fact I bought a sling last October for £15. And since Venezuela is now closed for export, it's harder to get hold of one.

So I guess it would make good sense to start breeding and contribute towards the CB market... That's assuming that he doesnt get munched first!

whats the major difference in appearance between a Blondi and Apophysis? I have a 4.5" female blondi and is there much difference just by looking at a blondi next to an apophysis? I was considering getting a second blondi just because they are incredible imo (although I have a metallica on the way so both are top choices, too bad the metallica was sold).

But if there is a nice difference maybe ill get apophysis instead of blondi.

i woulda gone for the P.metallica anyday, theyre an absolute beauty, not just because they have some blue on them, but because theyre wot i consider the complete package, plus im a massive pokie fan anyway.Just my opinion.was u gonna get them from the spidershop Dan?i know sumwhere else but they are considerably more money around £300 or so
Yup, got them from the Spider shop. I find that they tend to have more stock available at shows rather than on their website. I would love a Metallica (I love the name - being a heavy metal fan!), but I already have some pokies, and a metallica really is just a Pokie with some blue. I personally find a full coloured GBB, or even a mature Red Form G. Rosea more striking in appearance. I'd be very interested however, to find out where else sell's them for future reference. If you could P.M. me maybe? That would be great! :D

To be honest, there really isnt that much of a difference. Generally, Apophysis tend to be of a slightly smaller build, but can have a larger leg span. I believe that the world record is held by a male with a 13" leg span! Adult males are also quite striking - lot's of pink/purple. Really nice to look at.

When they are young, Apophysis have small pink "booties". It's been said that a small number of Blondi also have these, but personally, I believe it's down to hybridisation - But then I could be wrong, and indeed often am :D

In fact, here's a small image of an adult male. This pic doesnt belong to me, I found it trawling through the internet.

I'm not quite sure why I like the Apophysis so much, definitely the species I am most drawn to breeding (followed closely by the Green Bottle Blue, followed by P. Metallica). In general it's just a leggy Blondi with pink highlights in cases... But then again, I suppose that description sums up why I like them so much :D

If you can find an Apophysis for the same price as a Blondi, then by all means go for that. However, I've found that Apophysis tend to be more expensive, and are not nearly as Available - in the UK at least. If you find that the Apophysis are indeed considerably more expensive, then stick with the Blondi, and maybe get an Apophysis when the market fills up a little.... Exactly my plan for a P. Metallica! There is no way I'm paying £300 for a spider! Unfortunately, it seems that a select few are capitalising on the rarity of species like P. Metallica and charging inflated prices for personal gain. Such a shame.

well i guess I know which will be my final spider. Im getting my P Metallica on Thursday (being shipped Wed), and then I have a GBB coming. Once my Blondi reaches roughly 8-9" or so Ill look into getting an Apophysis, i really like the leggy look myself actually

What? The biggest spider ever recorded is a T. blondi which was 11"+ inches. Don't say T. apoph. is at 13" - because it simply doesn't exist. I'm sick of breeders lying to everyone saying "T. apophysis gets 13.2 inches!" - THEY DON'T! Guinness Book of World Records - look at it.

*I'm not yelling at DanHalen, but I'm just pissed at the websites and breeders who say this stuff.

actually what they are stating is something that was told, someone claims to have seen a 13" one (idk if it was blondi or apophysis) but there was no proof. It was on animal planet actually (thats where i heard it) so the biggest proven is 11" but supposedly there are claims of seeing 13"

At least that was my understanding, I dont claim to be an expert by any stretch

Of all my T.blondis, T. apophysis, and Pamphobeteus', I have gotten hit probably less than ten times with hairs - once I inhaled T. apophysis hair.... that sucked. Try handling them less, they are such great Ts too have... I hate to see anyone be turned off by these giants.

T.S.
I do not handle my T. blondi.
I seem to just have a really bad reaction to the hairs. Cleaning his cage out, gloves or not, causes me to have reactions on my face, neck, arms, hands, chest, stomach... it's just really bad for me. That is why I will never buy another one. They are beautiful spiders, and I really love mine, but he and I just don't get along!:D (because of the hairs)

Oh I remember that show. I also remeber the ones with witness claims of Nessie "the Lochness monster", bigfoot, Chupacabra, alien crop circles/abductions, etc... The funny thing is that there was "proof" of all these.

still the claim of a spider hitting 13" while not probable is maybe possible (although i wouldnt bet money on it) those other claims are just completely far fetched.

So the best way to put it is to say they are rumored to grow that large. Because thats completely true, its also rumored that people are abducted and that nessie is real. Is it proven to be a fact no, but hey, its rumored lol.

i guess that in some sort of once-in-a-blue-moon freak-of-nature occurence with just the right environmental conditions, a fully grown theraphosa could attain a bit over 1'. but it's a bit fishy that when many arachnophobes are spewing out as many unfounded and just plain rediculous misconceptions as possible in a somewhat coherant sentence, they mention Ts growing "13 inches".
