I'll never understand the "only docile ones" mentality. Docile Ts get very boring very fast. I like doing a little chasing anyway :D

I'll never understand the "only OW" mentality either ;) Most of what I like, colorwise, is NW, soo...plus the OP said it's because of her mother mostly.

Well I didn't really mean the comment to point at you or the OP, but her mother and the mentality in and of itself.

Oh, I didn't take that personally, I just though I answer anyways ;)
There's always people that don't think it's worth it keeping some kind of potent venomous animal that can put you "out of order" for some days. Plus, personally, most of what I like color-wise IS NW, there are maybe 3 exceptions to that rule for me currently. Tastes differ ;)

And for me, about half of my collection (soon more) is African. Everyone has their favorites.

My entire collection is South American, specifically, Chilean. I would suggest that you look into collecting by region if your mom is insisting upon NW species. Get Mexican species, North American species, Chilean, Brazilian, Peruvian, Philippino etc; the list goes on. There's a pretty good variety to be found there.

I don't own my own place. I currently live in a house that is split into two rentals. I will probably be in rentals for many years to come, but who knows whether those will be single-family homes or not.

I have seen escape accidents happen all over the boards.

If I ever have an escape, I want to be able to tell the other people that share the building in which I reside to let me know if they find a large fuzzy spider, but not to worry, that if they see the spider, it is highly unlikely to bite them, and that even if it does, it won't cause much damage. The thought of trudging upstairs to tell my neighbors that I've lost a highly venomous, defensive spider in our shared house causes me a great deal of anxiety. I don't want that additional anxiety when I open containers to feed or re-house animals.

This is why I have only docile, NW Ts. I don't plan to lose them, but I also don't have to be stressed out about that possibility.

This is why my mom says only docile. But its because my little sisters is only four years old. She would rather be safe then sorry.

There are a lot of OWs I want but not till I move out and get a place of my own.

In my situation, my parents would completely freak out if a tarantula (especially OW) escaped. They would probably help me find it and wouldn't make me give it away or anything, but they wouldn't appreciate it. Also, I have a ferret and an elderly cat who probably wouldn't handle a bite very well. That's why I do a lot of maintenance in a rubbermaid tub.

yeah, my H.mac sling got loose and my mom was so mad. She yelled at me to get rid of it. But she really didn't mean it.

Aphonopelma... Aphonopelma Everywhere.

I've had a lot of luck with my Aphonopelma chalcodes. Brachypelma smithi is usually a great choice, as is Grammostola pulchripes.
my A Anax will attack or bite at anything that comes near it.... maybe its a Agressive individual :)
I got bit by it once , I would suggest A chalcodes , or the Honderas Curly haired
You can get a A Anax , mine is just unusally agressive for the genus...

I'm sure this is a very good solution, the rubbermaid.

I, personally, am a worrier. And for me, I don't like my hobbies to involve any worry. One day, I will have a venomous snake, but I have always intuitively understood snakes a lot better than I have understood any inverts. I handle wild venomous viperids very comfortably. Not with my hands, but I can move them around comfortably with the appropriate tools, and learning that only ever held potential danger for me, not my wife or my neighbors. So while having a venomous snake for me will involve a lot of planning for the set-up and fail-safes, and caution in the actual keeping, once I've done the planning, it won't actually involve worry for me.

For me that's not the same for inverts. I don't personally "get" inverts the way I "get" snakes and predatory mammals (I don't "get" flight mammals like horses). I might one day own a potentially dangerous spider that I don't "get" right now, in the same way that I might one day own a horse. But I won't own either until I have enough experience with them that I feel confident in my abilities to predict them and preempt encounters that are dangerous for me or for others. If I can't happen to get that experience somewhere other than in my own personal ownership, I won't ever be owning either one.

I can tell you that I read about a lot more OW spider escapes on these boards than I have ever read about venomous snakes on the boards where that might come up. And I don't really think that's a reporting bias. I think OW spiders are actually much harder to move and feed without escape than are venomous snakes. So until I can get my OW spider-keeping (i.e. "ninja") skills up to par with my viperid handling skills, I won't be having any OW spiders! :)

One has eight legs and the other doesn't have any!

I eventually want to get a snake or two. Like a garter snake or a ribbon snake haha. I don't want to have to feed them mice which is why I made this choice on snake and I don't want to ever deal with a hot snake! They are absolutely amazing creatures. Many are so stunning and I love the way many of them flatten out and hiss but I could not bring myself to ever own a hot snake.

Good luck on your hunt , Great spider just mine is the Oddball Mean OBT version.
typically this genus is known for being Docile

OLD wolders are Lightning fast , my first OBT was lost & never found ... had various pokie escapes (all Found)
