Sunday I brought home my 1st tortoise! A gorgeous eastern hermann's tortoise (sex unknown yet).
We call 'her' Abby. My 6 year old daughter named her and is thrilled.

I did plenty of research and found the hermans was the best fit for us. Doesn't get too big, hardy, relatively affordable. So I found a local breeder and brought her home.

She loves to bask, eat, soak, have supervised walks around her outdoor enclosure and nap afterwards.

Pic spam time!

Cool! That's a good size, too - well started. Most are about the size of a quarter when first hatched. I'm not sure how fast this species grows, but one that size would be about a 2-3-year-old in the species I breed. Will you keep it mostly indoors or outdoors?

They've all got awesome personalities, so enjoy getting to know it!

It was hatched 1/8/2025 according to the breeder. The pics (other than in my hand) make it look bigger than it really is. But nonetheless it is definitely well started and very healthy. I'm still nervous while learning it's behaviors though in regards to what's normal vs not.

I plan to have it outdoors in the Rubbermaid enclosure (last pic) on nice days, unsupervised when it's bigger. We have great temps and humidity levels where I live to help it thrive.
I will likely keep it indoors during the winter though as the shallowness of the outdoor enclosure will prevent it from burrowing for winter.

'She' is very curious and very observant, I'm having a lot of fun! Hard not to handle them but I shall resist. 😵💫

Awesome! Just build a cover for the tub out of hardware cloth or chicken wire - you don't want a racoon or something running off with your little buddy!
