The Pederseni is not mature yet next molt for him, he is a backup make for a few females that might molt on me.

The 4 above in the picture are P. Metallicas. :D

That is the way they were sold to me. I am not keeping them in that. Tarantulas.com raises their stuff in setups like this and they do very well. But I already moved them into vials of my own.

I know its not but, my first thought about your pics was- why are the T's being kept on sauerkraut?!...:? {D ...never seen substrate that color. Great buys you made. Any time you feel overloaded with P.Metallica's you can send a few my way!

P.metallicas? I'm envious. Always wanted one, but it'd take me a while to get that kind of cash, and admittedly I have a hard time saving money.

Damn...just when I thought I was done buying T's, P. metallicas start going for really good prices! I just ordered 2. Hope you didn't pick out all the females Ryan!

:) You didn't say to the Metallica dealer " I'll swap you 1000 B vagans, a few hundred poec, and various assorted bracky slings for 4 metallicas" then ? :)

I look forward to the day when hobbyists call vials "unconventional", not deli-style insect cups with well-ventilated lids. One common mistake made by hobbyists is using small poor-ventilated containers that create stagnant conditions if any moisture is added. In my opinion, this is the number one cause of mortality with early instars of a number of species, especially Avicularia versicolor. Remember, additional moisture is easily added, but overly damp conditions requires a complete change of container. With the large amount of ventilation provided by the insect cup style paper mesh lid, a natural evaporation process occurs resulting in both elevated humidity AND good airflow. As the containers dry, they can be rehydrated easily and will dry gradually over a short period of time. We put most spiderlings, even tiny little 2nd instar A. minatrix, in 16-24 oz. deli cups with insect cup poly lids using two inches slightly damp vermiculite covered by a bed of damp sphagnum moss as substrate. The spiders may have plenty of space in a much smaller container, but I want to provide plenty of AIRspace. An added benefit of this style of cup is that it does not allow pests such as phorid flies to enter the container.

Regards, MJ

Good point! I always cut the center of the tops out of my vials and hot glue a screen in its place. I haven't had any problems.
