Really nice pics. Copperheads are my favorite of all the venomous snakes. Are these pics of captive specimens or wild?

Hi, This is my snake. I had to clean its cage so I took a few pics while I had it out.

Very, very nice.

Are these the ones you caught earlier in the year and are keeping?

less potent than most north american vipers but it is still a dangerous snake. Whats nice about them though is their temperment as compared to other pit vipers(or so I've heard)

You still can get a finger amputated.
Hmm compared to other pitvipers? Ive kept Crotalus ssp. that been just as calm but yes most are quite calm in captivity (in the wild they seems a bit more prone to bite)

Brian, those are nice pics. How often do you find them in your searches?
I love to herp but have maybe found a dozen. I do think they are one of the most colorful snakes in North America. Now that I live in S.w kansas instead of around Manhattan I find alot of prairie rattlers, not as colorful, but alot more attitude.

nice

Beautiful picts you have of your copperhead. There was a really nice looking copper right in the empty lot near my house today but my neighbor across the street killed it before I got home =\ Too many little kids in this neighborhood though.

It was about 13" long.

cool.

I can't tell you how many close calls I've had with these when I was running around in the woods as a kid.

There is some disagreement on this point, as this article brings to light:

My own experience with these in the wild is that they usually just try to get away, of course. But, if you get close, or get them aggravated, they can be extremely defensive. They will bite very readily when confronted and are not what I would call a docile snake. See this article for a first-hand bite report:

Beautiful snake by the way! One of the prettiest north American snakes IMO.

Beautiful copper colors, the ones I find around Ohio and Kentucky are darker gray almost, not nearly that nice! Very cool looking eyes in the picure too. Do you know if its male or female?

in my experiences, if you come upon them basking over water, they will instantly drop in and swim.
but most cases, when they are curled up, I've yet to see one strike, but I've also yet to see one back down.

I had a dog get bit by one years ago, when I was a kid. He was ok after a few hours. prolly saved me/my brother from being bitten since we were headed in that direction.

Girl may lose arm after school snake bite

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

POTTSTOWN, Pa. -- A 14-year-old girl may lose her arm after being bitten by
a poisonous copperhead snake at school, authorities said.

The snake was caught in Valley Forge by a 17-year-old male student, who took
it in a shoebox to a drama club gathering at St. Pius X High School on
Friday, Lower Pottsgrove Police Chief Ray Bechtel said. No regular classes
were held that day, which was designated for staff development.

The boy was showing the reptile to other students when it bit the girl's
finger, Bechtel said.

The girl, whose name was not released by police, apparently threw the snake
across the room and the boy threw it outside. The snake was not found, but
authorities were able to identify it because the boy photographed it with
his camera cellphone, said Bechtel.

The victim was treated at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center about 45 minutes
after being bitten, he said.

"The doctors said if it had been a half-hour longer she would likely have
been dead," said Bechtel.

However, police said she could still lose her arm.

Police did not have an update on the girl's condition Sunday. She had been
in very serious condition at Hershey Medical Center.

No charges were filed but police said they were investigating.

Copperhead snake bites are typically not fatal but are extremely painful and
may cause extensive scarring and loss of limb use, according to the North
Carolina Cooperative Extension of North Carolina State University.
