New Brazilian Black Tarantula Need Help

So I just bought a new Brazilian Black that came with enclosure and all, the enclosure stinks because I’m almost positive the first owner didn’t know how to take care of it and the substrate is very old and rotten. T looks fairly young probably about a year old with how many molts are in the enclosure. I need help on what to do first and how to help this T. I know the enclosure it not very good for this species, I will be replacing it soon with a wider and shorter tank. I’m thinking about replacing substrate with moist coconut fiber and layering it high enough so the T doesn’t suffer a fatal fall. But other than that I have no clue, any tips?

Get a new enclosure.
A Tupperware, small kritter keeper, anything.
Pack it with substrate, provide a hide and water dish. It can be that simple. That enclosure is a nightmare.

Thank you so much, and yes I know, the enclosure is probably one of the worst I’ve seen. But the T is pretty small, quite afraid it will drown if a water dish is put in so I might wait. I don’t know the temperament of the T yet. I have no clue if it was bred in captivity or not. Don’t want it freaking out when I’m trying to re-house it.

It won't drown. You can use a bottlecap.
When you rehouse, just move the entire enclosure onto the floor somewhere where the spider can't get away from you or fall.
Start by removing decorations and everything out of the enclosure and gently coax the little fella with a paintbrush or something into a cup/container. It shouldn't give you much trouble. Work slowly and carefully.
Very cool spider.
Best of luck.

I love those containers.
Got three and used them right up.
Work freaking perfectly for juvies.

Maybe it is one, and maybe not. There are other Ts this could be.
I might be able to get a better picture, any idea of what else it could be. Guy I bought it from labeled it a Brazilian black, bought it from an exotic pet shop that had gotten it from someone else that I thinks breeds them. So I was almost positive it was a black.

That's helpful information, likely to be one then.

It’s hard to gauge the size of it, but there are many options for containers like @DomGom TheFather gave you, there’s also things like this that I picked up on Amazon for 25 for a juvenile enclosure, or something like the second off Amazon for 10 or the 3rd mind you it had a centipede in it but it’s from the Container Store 517F6F9B-5996-4CEB-8D09-37915889ACF3.jpeg

The coco fiber I put in is probably too moist but it should dry in a couple days. If not I can make some more and let it dry for longer and replace it again. It will take it a while to get used to the new setup and it’s not the best but it’s better than before for sure. The T is also very very calm and docile. But that’s to be expected from a Brazilian black. I would like to know if there is any errors I’ve made setting this up, I’m still a fairly new T owner. image.jpg

You have the COMPLETELY WRONG setup for that animal. If you keep it like that, it will DIE, it will be known as the Brazilian SPLAT.

Research what is needed for a terrestrial T here on AB. There are millions of posts just like yours.

Great species! I used to have one.
