Hello
I am very concerned about my Avicularia Avicularia. She is a young female. I had her in a big cheese ball container for her first home April of this year and she webbed up nicely and molted. I eventually bought her a nice arboreal enclosure 4 months later and she still hasn't webbed up to this day. She will eat sporadically and hasn't molted since. She wonders around her enclosure constantly. Her abdomen is getting very small and she won't take any crickets right now. I also noticed what seems to be like white bead like areas under her arms. Please know I am still new in the Tarantula hobby so if this is normal I need to know. I am attaching current photos of her and her enclosure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't that a MM? If so , then he is searching for a female to pair with. Since that is his purpose after he molts for the last time. They do wonder around alot and don't eat very often.

Your tarantula is not a female. It's a mature male, and you can tell by looking at the emboli on his pedipalps. The behavior you're describing is normal for a mature male. Their only goal at this point is to find a female to mate with. They eventually stop eating and waste away until they die. Mature males don't live very long and it's sad, but it's all part of their natural life cycle. Try offering him food sporadically and most importantly, make sure he has access to fresh, clean water. Don't be alarmed if he doesn't eat- it's normal for them. Depending on the species a mature male tarantula might live anywhere from a few months to 2 years after its final molt (there are outliers). It is very likely that he will not molt again. Mature males who attempt to molt again usually die in the process.

He looks like a healthy mature male doing what mature males do. (As other users mentioned, mature males spend much of their time looking for females and often eat less.) Keep him hydrated, offer food once every week or two, and don't worry too much if he doesn't eat.

As previously mentioned it can live from a few months to like 1-2 years. Sadly that is what happens to males after last molt.

I'm really sorry to hear you've been lied to and so certain about being a female. I even put up a "?" mark because I couldn't believe my eyes that MM are sold as females.

Don't be sad about it though. He's still a lovely T. And I'm sure you'll take a good care of him. Better know now , than asking urself later what you did wrong because It'd die off.

There is a chance that you as well might look into giving him to fulfill his purpose and borrow him for a breeding loan, and with that you can get yourself some little T's of your own Avic.

Thank you so kindly. I love this T very much and will continue to care for him with all my love. I do not know anyone that I can pair him with. I am pretty alone in this hobby it seems. Most family and friends are very insulting about my love for my Ts. I wonder what other lies are involving the other Ts I got. I have a beautiful Curly hair I got from them they also claimed to be a young female. I have a beautiful P. Regalis I have been raising from a tiny sling. I will attach photos. I am hoping my P. Regalis is a female.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. Your advice, as well as the other member's advice is priceless to me.

Not a problem at all.

Don't know how pairing goes in America. In Europe or in my country it usually goes through FB groups and multi sellers that will search for one and offer up a deal.

To confirm what they are just wait up for a molt and I'm sure this forum will let you know what you've got. :)

Not sure why anyone would go to Craigslist for a breeding loan. We have a Classifieds section with Invertsonals right here:

For more information on how to use it, please see this tutorial:

All users are allowed one breeding loan ad at any time, just make sure to follow the rules. ;) Please know that the Invertsonals are strictly for breeding loans. If you want cash, then it would be considered a For Sale ad, and is not allowed in the Invertsonals category.

With regards to any sexing questions, please post your images in the Tarantula Sexing Gallery, which can be found here:

Any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me privately. :)

Thanks,

Debby

Its relative....some MMs may only live a short time, others make it a year or even more. But its not like its going to flop over next week.

Keep in mind that once mature, its needs change a bit as well as behavior. It will likely only (mostly) web now when making sperm webs and eating....it will also require much less food. So you dont need to offer food all that often, like once or twice a month. Also, since your t will not molt again, you can just let a cricket roam the floors and its not a worry....it will also need more access to water, so keep the dish full and give a little spritz on the wall on a regular basis.
I'm beyond heartbroken
Because its male? You shouldnt feel bad.....MMs are quite interesting...getting to see a sperm web made is fascinating and learning to recognize and even ship out a MM is also helpful in the long term. If you are willing to send him out, this is one of the best ways to start making valuable contacts, once you start doing this, the t world doesnt seem as bleak and lonely....a place like this is another good step toward that.

There are always people looking and as posted above, our classified section is great for that.

I recall when I got into the hobby, I felt just like you...I had no one and as a result, really thought the hobby was much smaller and more isolated than it actually is.

That MM, combined with a great forum such as this one, will undoubtedly allow you to make connections, and I bet you will be surprised to find one or two right in your area in due time.

Keep in mind, Avics pair really easily and the males usually survive, time and time again.....I have had single MM avics pair with as many as 8 females and still die of old age many months later. I would take him myself, but i just had a male mature for me last week.....as a breeder my reaction to the MM was exactly the opposite of yours, I was so happy I almost started giggling as my female is ready for him as soon as he makes a sperm web.

Good luck and dont be sad, there can be no adorable little avic babies without these MMs:)

Without little fella's like yours, captive breeding wouldn't be as possible as it is now.
I'm sorry your feeling bad about this, it is always heartbreaking when we find out beloved pets have shorter lifespans than expected.
Think about where you want to go with him from here and make a game plan. Planning may give you some comfort and an objective for him, weather it be breeding or keeping him as a pet.

Hate to say it, but that regalis looks male to me. Color alone is pretty tough to go by though, if you get a good clear picture of the underside and post it in the sexing forum, you will get some more accurate replies.
