I have read reports that these range into northern Wisconsin but in 30 years I have never seen one. I am looking for anyone who has. I will be vacationing
in Baraboo this September. I would love to find some. Any help would be great.
I've not been to WI but I've only seen Narceus annularis in old growth where I live and I only know of one place with old growth within a few hours drive of me. If you don't see any gigantic dead and live trees you're probably in the wrong area.
I've spent my entire life in and out of rural regions of West Virginia and Maryland and never saw one until a couple of years ago. The only time I've seen an area abundant with them was the North side of a small mountain in WV. They seem to like "morel country"; that's shady sides of mountains with old growth deciduous forest. I dug around in 3 different rotting logs and found 1 or 2 on or in each one.
I have been looking for good hunting sites and have found a few that look good. It's still a little cold to go looking in my opinion but it should be warming up soon. These two bug guide submissions are the basis for my inquiry. http://bugguide.net/node/view/82490 As far as I know these will only eat giant millipedes. Oh yeah and this. http://bugguide.net/node/view/147142/bgimage
