I went to Japan awhile back and I just received some of the photos. This is a Banana Spider and I thought if anyone would appreciate it... it would be you guys. Wow, I completely forgot about these photos too!

Anyone know the genus and species?

I think it's a Nephila, but no clue on the specieslevel...

Jorogumo! Japanese culture has neat folklore about these- http://www.obakemono.com/obake/jorogumo/
I learn something every day on here! Thanks, I did not know that.

When I lived there, in late summer/fall they were everywhere! Though I think the species I saw were Nephila clavata.
Also, I was there in the late summer as well and they were literally everywhere! I bet you are probably right and that the species I saw were Nephila clavata!

Well from the pic, it looks like the first reply was correct, that's Nephila pilipes. It seems they are much larger and have a smaller red spot on the bottom of their abdomen. I wish I had done more entomology/arachnology study there, they have amazing "bugs"!

I didn't notice the difference until you posted this! Thanks, I just completed my bachelor of biology and this is my first term working towards my master of entomology! There is so much information to learn, but it will be so worth it.

Me too! I didn't declare my major until after I returned home. Someday I will return to Japan and hopefully have the chance to work with more of their arachnids.

You're very lucky! I just graduated with a bachelor's in Japan Studies but I'm seriously considering going back for a master's in entomology, but I'm hesitant because I heard it requires taking some statistics classes and that they're very difficult. :( I have no problem in identifying and studying arthropods, though. My entomology lab teacher told me I should be taking the 400 level class.

I understand completely! I was terrible at math and to be honest I am still not that great! But that is why we have tutors and the science resource center.
I had to take biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus before I was able to graduate with a bachelor of biology. I remember saying the same thing about statistics, but honestly thinking back on it statistics was a refreshing break! If you are math illiterate like myself (it is possible, but you just have to try really hard lol). I was always jealous of people who thought math was easy! Plus, once you are done with calculus you are done FOREVER! And you never have to take another math class in your life (probably the best day of my life).
