My rosie has turned on me a few times. Every one of those times, it was my fault. When you're in the T's cage, you're in their space, and they deserve to be treated and respected as such. These days, I've learned to use removable cage decorations (ie: her hide) to get her out, rather than using my hands. However, if she's having a bout of spider-pms, I respect it and let her be.

Personally though, I don't think your rosie is a biter. If you want to see a good example of an intractible rosie, check out John3800 on YouTube. He has a couple really good videos of his psycho rosie being...well....psychotic.

My rose hair is very old, ca 17 yo.
Is it more fragile then?
I´ve treated her like an old lady, not trying to stress her, dropping the crickets just in front of her and not tried to hold her.

The general idea here is that Tarantulas can be (and they WILL be) very moody, and one day you touch her and she walks, another one she will bite or finger, you will pull it frightened by reflex and launch her for a trip across the room. So, everytime use something soft to gentle touch her to see her mood.

Other idea is that people who work at pet stores know very, very, very little, no matter if they are 15, 20, 25 or 60 years old. I'm 19 with zits on my face and know more than lots and lots of people out there. And believe me, i learned from taking advice and crossing information. Like the one you get here and the pet shop. My conclusion: Pet shops are no experts at exotic animals. They just want the money. If you tell us the other 5 species they keep, and the conditions they keep, there is a 95% chance that we can say that's wrong housing.

When you want to handle her, get her out of her territory by cupping her and then handle her. Test her mood as previously said with something soft. If she is in bad mood leave her alone. Tarantulas are very easily startled and some can be very skittish.

Glad I could entertain and inform you! :D I used to walk around with my Rose everywhere. Friends houses, school, school for elementery kids with all sorts of tough problems where a friend taught. To the park, on hikes,...
It even lived in a wild party house for a while and would be brought out surrounded by a bunch of teenagers in all states of inebriation, all states, with blaring music etc. hehe. I was a smart one huh?

Of course, I wouldn't do anything of the sort now. *except-I do still take some of my avicularia species with me for coffee sometimes. And this is counter to what everyone else in here thinks, and just watch, they are going to tell me!
hehe, but I have never been conventional, and never will be, so here we go.

Oh, and I do do school presentations. So in a way, coffee shop is training ground for 40 screaming 3rd graders in a classroom! But I wouldn't recommend that either! But* My T's that get to go on field trips, seem to be healthier for it, and become more active, even for some time after being re-caged. I personally feel like, if I am going to keep it in this little cage for it's life, the least I can do is let it out for "field trips". I mean, when I took my 2" Avicularia versicolor last week, it walked probably a 1/4 mile in the 3 hours it was out. Busy little thing was walking around a lot! Visited with my buddy who was there when I got it, and I introduced it to a vet that I am trying to convince to work on arachnids, or at very least, she is looking into a place I can send deaths that will look at them under scanning electron microscope and I may get access to some equipment if I ever need it...

Anywho, enjoy your t. Oh, and I almost forgot... If you do let a terrestrial sp. like a G. rosea out to play, keep it close to the ground. A small fall can be a disaster. This is opposed to the Avicularia sp. I mentioned above, which is aboreal, and can land a jump.

P.S. Most everyone here thinks they shouldn't be anywhere but their cage.
I understand and respect that. But we risk life and limb every time we go outside. Every time we drive a car. Heck just breathing in some places can kill you these days! Should we all sit in our houses waiting for disaster to strike? Huddled up in our Code 3 bio-bomb shelters buried in our basements? Glued to the T.V. just waiting to be warned about the next disaster, while food is delivered through a slot in the door? HECK NO!
I am LIVING life best I can and if the ships sinking, I'm gonna enjoy the ride down. I am not abusing my Tarantula by taking it outside! hehe. I hope this doesn't blow up your thread, but I just had to get that out! :D :3:

Great advice, thank you! Your post was very informative and funny as heck! I really enjoyed the part about the hatchet or the part about the party. lololol

You sound kind of like a friend my husband had in highschool. He used to put his tarantula on his shoulder and walk around with it--sometimes outside.

Also glad to hear it's not a major hospital ordeal if I get bit.

lololol I am on the same page with you buddy. I want to live life to the fullest and you better believe that includes befriending my T. Sure I fear pain...but I'm willing to risk it. She just walked around in our room with my husband and i. She crawled over our hands, but we didn't force her to come on us. We want her to feel comfortable with us. I think in the beginning I took it too fast. Thank God I haven't gotten bitten.
