Wow! They drink through the substrate? How? Do they grab a bolus of substrate, squeeze and lap it up like a sponge?

They drink what is on the surface when the water first gets back there. But my rufilata girl cleared out all her substrate in her hide so when some water dripped back there it pooled on the bare plastic and she lapped up every drop. I even added water every few minutes for an hour till she was done drinking. She is huge now so I guess we shale see.

Well, it's not an ornata....it's a rufilata!
I sprayed down the substrate right after I took the pic. I like to moisten the substrate on the opposite side of the egg chamber and keep the laying site relatively dry until after she lays. Once she lays I make sure to mist enough into the back area where she can reach water if she wants, or can move her sac farther away fom the moist areas.
