It is not recomended that you hold him due to the high level of stress that can be placed on him, and the possibilities of a fall that can result in injury or death. If you were to hold him, which I do not recomend, give him at least a week to settle down. Then you will place your hand on the ground, and then you will scoot the him onto your hand.
