I've always found vinegaroons in burrows they've dug out under rocks or logs. If something is provided on the surface for them to burrow under, the substrate needn't support a burrow by itself.

I'm content to just observe most inverts but I may try to get mine used to handling, if only so it doesn't freak out like it does every time I fix something in the tank.
