Hey wise spidery folk in my phone. I’m super new to owning T’s. I’ve recently purchased my very first, she’s a gorgeous Salmon Pink Birdeater. She’s approximately 12 months old. She’s settled in super well but I hate her current set up (she came with it) I can’t see her well, she can’t burrow (although I’ve read a lot and the reviews on that are so mixed as to whether they are lazy and just hang out) mine currently has dug herself a cave so I want her to have the availability to go deeper if she’d like. While also giving her a more suitable space to grow ever bigger in. So I had a spare 37 ltr fish tank handy, (48.8x26.8x38.6cm) and know the size is far more suitable. I’ve removed the lid and am hand making a custome snug mesh lid so she has plenty of ventilation. I’m just not sure if I’m giving her enough substrate? I don’t want her falling and hurting herself although she hasn’t attempted to climb in her current but possibly because she can touch the ceiling if she simple stands against the wall. So I’ve attached a picture I’m happy to throw double the amount in if advised. There’s no water bowl in there yet because she won’t go in this until I’m entire sure it’s suitable for her and she’s using it. She’s currently happy where she is and feeding very well. Yes she does have a light but only for blue light so I can watch her before i go to bed, it’s the only artificial light she does get as she has sunlight and it will be turned off when I go to sleep so I’m not confusing the pants off her. So and hour or 2 max and probably not daily. Also for reference im in the uk. CDE46F0C-7A36-4265-B735-4DE4EAB3B8C5.jpeg 13260F01-B088-4168-BDAF-78887E076169.jpeg

Didn’t know you could turn off the sun there 🤣

You could use that and remove the pink thing provided T wont fall

How big is she? Habitat size is much more correlated to the size of the T than it's age. Specifically, if you know what her approximate DLS (Diagonal leg span) is, you can size her tank based on that. From my research I've concluded that the Length and width of the tank should be at least 2-3x her leg span. I definitely think you can add more substrate, one as you mentioned to allow her room to burrow, but also because you don't want her to fall and get injured if she decides to climb the walls of her tank. The rule I've seen is that there should be enough substrate so that if she falls, she won't fall more than twice her leg span. Looks like you can comfortably add about 3-4 inches of substrate since the current enclosure is filled up less than halfway.

Also, I'm pretty new to keeping T's as well, so if anything I said sounds wrong definitely don't take it as fact.

Also (and again I'm not 100% sure) but I haven't come across anything suggesting that Tarantulas benefit from any sort of light. I know they're not supposed to get direct sunlight. My little T usually hides in the darkest corner of the tank in it's little cork log cave

I knew people would spot the light and have questions why it was there. I’m not aware of another t’s needed uv but I wanted to explain it wasn’t. Just purely selfish reasons. The rooms pretty dank and dark, like my soul hahaha

Yeah I don't think sporadic doses of light will hurt them, they just don't really like it or need it

Seems like an immense tank size for an unknown sized spider ? I generally fill glass tanks half with substrate or more , but this one would take a significant amount of coco fiber / etc ..
what’s the dimensions in inches ?
unknown sized spider leg span ?

How big is the t....size means everything, age means nothing.
Between 5 and 6 inches currently

The this tank is very similar in size length and width to what she’s in, but it’s 48x26x38cm the height is obviously when it gains in size. I have ordered more substrate to half full, the T is around 5-6inches currently

Ahh I see , for my similar sized spider I gave it this much room to climb . About its legspan or slightly more by an inch . Mine never hides it seems . And be sure there’s nothing sharp to fall on either .

So I doubled the substrate, removed the hard and sharp rock thing and added more bark. She’s been in for 18 ish hours so far she has climbed a few times. But that was expected as the plants make it easily reachable. Seems to be happy and confident in there. And I know she’ll grow fast and fill it so hopefully that’ll be her done and remove stress of further moves. Thank you for your help and advice I appreciate it
