Wow, 5.5" and not mature yet? That is definitely a big boy. And that little growth is interesting, but I agree that it's likely what is causing the slight leaking. Let us know how he progresses.
I'll definately keep updating. He was cleaning the leg that was leaking when I checked on him a second a go but it looks like it might have stopped, I'll check again in a little bit. The fact that he's grooming rather actively makes me really think he'll be ok weather he casts the leg off or the bleeding stops.

My guess is he probably won't cast it off. It looks like the leak was pretty minimal so hopefully it won't even come to that.

Hopefully so. I just got another look at it, and theres an obvious wound there, but it does seemed to have stopped.

First off......THAT is one gorgeous spider!!!!!!

Second, I'd keep it in an ICU for a couple of days for observatonal purposes. He may need to cast a leg, but as long as it's not severely leaking, or leaking for a protracted period you should be good. Even if he does cast, you're probably not going to lose him.

Finally, I am sooooo jealous of that coloration!!!!!! Damn you!!!! {D

LOL. I have to agree, he is just stunning. I'm going to try to talk my parents into letting me get a female so I can breed him when he does eventually mature.

I don't think I'm going to put him in ICU, he's seems to be fine and the bleeding has stopped. If he starts showing signs of dehydration, or if he curls I'll put him in ICU but he seems to be doing fine now.

Me too, I was really worried. I mean the rational side of me knew he was probably going to be ok, but sometimes, its hard to listen to your rational side...

Just one droplet? Not a steady stream? It will probably be okay. But if you're really worried you can slow it down by throwing it in the freezer for a bit, take it out and get something like tissue on the wound.

I'm glad its righted itselg. How does it look otherwise? No problems?
Honestly, the bolded is dangerous advice. The T just molted and had just flipped back over. A freshly molted T is very delicate and just startling it can cause it to move too quickly. This in turn could cause further injury, because it isn't hardened. Since this is a 5" tarantula it will also take longer for it to harden up.

Also, just throwing it in the freezer to slow it down isn't as easy as it sounds. A T is a cold blooded animal, so there is the chance of leaving it too long. Unless you have done it before and could give a specific time, this could have tragic consequences. I would put it in the fridge if I felt that I had to slow it down. This is a B. smithi though, which are 'usually' fairly docile.

I am not trying to belittle you, just pointing it out; so maybe next time you won't give dangerous advice. Sometimes, people are new and try and offer advice on things they have no experience on, because they want to help in an emergency. I think maybe this was one of these times.:) On the flip side, the purple seems like safe advice to me!:D

He's doing perfectly fine now I'm glad to say. The wound is still obvious on his leg, but he's no longer bleeding and he's been pretty active with his post molt streatching and grooming. :) I just can't believe it, I was so NOT expecting him to molt. {D Good thing I didn't pull him out to fix his tank the day before like I'd planned.
