Hello, so i’ve had my mexican red knee for a little over a year and a half. I’ve been dealing with this white speckle mold for awhile now. It’s gettin super annoying and i don’t want to harm my spider, i haven’t noticed any stress signs on her she’s all normal but this damn mold always pops back up. I try not to
keep the tank wet at all because that triggers the mold like crazy it usually grows in the lower layers where it stays moist and under the water dish. I always spot pick and it doesn’t tend to grow and bigger past the moist spots but it stays in the lower layers and it always pops up even when i keep the soil dry. I dont want it to be harmful to my T.. i use a mix of coco fiber eco earth soil and creature soil, i’ve redone her whole enclosure and it just always pops back up. It’s super irritating and id like some advice on whether it’s harming her or if it’s just pesky mold i can pick out. It never forms on the top layer it’s always down where the water settles and i don’t want to leave her tank too dry but i’m sick of the mold popping up when i put even a speck of water. I attached some photos of it if anyone wants to give me advice or knows what type of mold this is and what i can do about it thank u

Mold comes because too much humidity, the sub looks too wet in parts there. A B Harmorii/Smithi should have dry sub.

Just remove the mold and don’t panic. Search the forum, there are a million threads on mold here.

Ventilation could also be a small cause , im sure top ventilation in the lid would help humidity to escape better than just cross ventilation

Doesn’t look that bad , this bad would be more noticeable. I guess you’re asking for opinions or critiques ?

Mold threads come up on Arachnoboards every day or two.
Suggest Searching the previous discussions/ threads/ back logs.

It would have to be pretty extreme to be harmful; a little bit like that is no problem whatsoever.

well i only have top ventilation which may be the issue, if it remains a issue i will probbaly try to get a cross ventilated tank.

well more towards the end i just ask for advice or if it will harm my spider that’s what i was looking for.
You will have to spot pick IME. Spores are everywhere. Mold is not so much an issue- just don’t let it become a carpet.

Substrate out of bags can be moist. I have a thread on this. So it takes time to dry out. Spot clean to reduce spread. And let it dry: your species wont need a full on moist substrate. Especialy if air is humid already.

i have and enclosure that has serious mold in it. Mold or fungi, they arent that harmful. Unless its a tarantula mold, and its not. If you can remove it then super. Mine in in the lower levels.

i mean look at my bag! Its sold clean and this happens. Of course it will happen in your enclosure. Baking it wont be advised. It just invites different things inside.

i am still using that bag. Its wasnt even opened. I prepared three enclosures that i am letting dry out. And it will be a test.

most of mold and fungi in our enclosures are feeding off of decomposing organic matter off a plant.

Tarantulas are not a plant.

the mold on boluses and food remains is something else. Id be more worried about that.

my indoor plants get the white stuff when too moist. It never comes back when i have my watering and ventilation in check. Its usualy in winter that it shows up too.

a few months ago i redid and cleaned everything and it still popped up.. i think it may be a ventilation thing.
It will keep popping up because the spores are still there, and there's not much you can do about it. You can clean out the parts that have mold, but the spores might still be in other parts of the soil, waiting to grow when the moisture conditions prove right. You can change out all the substrate, but lots of substrate has the capacity to grow mold or fungus, so unless it's really bad, it's probably not worth the hassle, and with an arid species like this, your better bet is to try to maintain the conditions that will keep the mold in check.

I had mold in my B. hamorii's enclosure for a while and was worried about it before searching the forums and seeing lots of info on it here. I was able to dry the substrate out faster by poking a few holes in it with a chopstick around the problem areas (but then I had to fill those holes back in once the problem resolved because crickets kept hiding in them!). Now there's still a bit of mold in the corner that has the water dish, not so much because I soak it but because my girl likes to pounce on the water stream and splash it everywhere, but it's minimal and causes no issues.
