I have seen a few recipes from researching around the internet. Most suggest certain kinds of decaying wood. I am interested in how most people source this or find it. I have read some people age their own. I am curious about the methods they use.

Where I live I just find it. Punky wood. My big concern is "stowaway" critters when collecting your own.

You can bake the wood in the oven at a low temperature. This won't harden the wood, but will kill any critters hiding in it. Another option is to collect it in a large bag and toss it in the freezer overnight, but some critters can actually survive that.

I've used Josh's Milli Mix, and while the mix is good, all the bags I've purchased have come contaminated with tiny centipedes. As long as you bake it thoroughly, it kills them off, but be aware of the risk!

That is pretty cool, but alarming. Cant believe they'd send out contaminated substrate. Thanks for telling me, I probably won't try them unless I plan to keep any centipedes in it

Yeah, not sure what's going on with that, I've heard from at least one other person with a similar experience!

Once got a bag of josh's milli mix with a chunk of glass in it. While the substrate is great, i would says its definitely a "use at your own risk" sorta thing
