I kind of want to get to the bottom of the "myth" that screen lids can rip off spider limbs. Is this true, or has anybody had experience or incidents?

I want to get a nice enclosure for my L parahybana female cuz she's so awesome, and I like how screened tanks look
Thx

There’s your proof. That could cause an injury like leg loss or a fatal fall.

Woven wire mesh can definitely catch their feet.
It happens.
Expanded metal or perforated lids don't seem to.
You'll still get the same look.

Yes. Do people go their whole career and it never happen, also yes.

As the @viper69 says... You can not wear a seat belt and never crash and its fine. But the day you do it's trouble.

No need to take the risk, especially when it's an easy modification.

It’s not a myth. I have personally had Avic caught on screen from ExoTerra!

Also, your concept of “like the way it looks”

SO WHAT! No one gives a damn what you like.

You do the right thing for the animals, NOT for you. If you don’t understand that concept stop keeping animals now!

I hate reading that type of selfish ridiculous concept, it’s nothing but human-centric thinking. :vomit:

It’s literally not a myth…..we’ve seen it happen.

Provide your animal with a safe habitat, or don’t keep one if you know it’s unsafe but want to do it anyway.

To clarify, woven wire mesh is unsafe as tarantulas can get their tarsal claws stuck where the wires overlap because the wires can shift/retract when walked on, when this happens the tarantula will sometimes self-amputate the stuck leg in order to free itself.

Expanded metal mesh or perforated sheet metal are safer mesh alternatives as they're rigid structures with no moving/overlapping wires for them to get stuck in.

Ok thanks guys. Just want to do what's best for my animals, I'm not going to be selfish because of what I want.

Hey Viperxd. What I meant was safety first and looks after, I really love my Tarantulas and I give them the best possible care, which is why I'm clarifying with you guys :)

It's not like a bit of acrylic spoils the enclosure anyways... You don't enjoy the T by looking through the top vent, it just makes it safer

I'll also put in something here.. As well as being able to take limbs off from hanging/getting stuck, some T's have been known to literally bite/tear/rip a hole in mesh screen lids with their fangs and escape. Never happened to me, I have acrylic lids, but I've seen it through some searching.

My pulchra the last time she got stuck.

I found her twice hanging from one leg and one with the fang stuck. Thanks that I saw the situation inmediately nothing happened.

As Grym reaper said, perforated grilles are much safer than woven mesh type ventilation system, the tarsal claws cant't get stuck on them, and also they are harder to climb horizontally . Also they can act like a support for a sliding doors etc.

if you have to use the wire mesh, go some place they sell fly tying tools and by a Bodkin. It is a long, tapering needle with a nice handle. It is easy to manage/control and you can get under the nail and free it

@Braden could you post a picture of your enclosure/tank.

Well I haven't bought one yet which is why I was asking. You know like a glass aquarium with a typical screen lid, something like that
