Beetle--> "Megasoma actaeon"
Anyone have any of these? Any experience with them? I want a few. I could not find any topics on them.

well i'll assume they're similar in care to Eupatorus which i may be getting in a month or two,
adults eat fruist, bananas and such(very soft fruit is best) and if you're getting them as larvae you'll wan to find out from the supplier what substrate hes got them on , so as little grow time as possible is wasted on switching to a new one.
horse dung is great if mixed into whatever substrate your keeping them on,

As an exotic, the USDA won't allow them, so if you get any, keep it under your hat!

Check out the beetle breeding manual at www.naturalworlds.org

Well, keeping them is slightly different from Eupatorus because that's an Asian species. A more similar species would be Megasoma elephas elephas especially because it's under the same genus. Soft fruit is good; especially sweet ones (i.e. mangoes, banannas)

Treat them just like any other large Dynastid - see http://www.naturalworlds.org/scarabaeidae/manual/Scarabaeidae_breeding_1.htm for an excellent guide to getting started with all of the large beetles.

If you do manage to get hold of any leagally in the US, be prepared for a long wait . The larvae take 3 years to develop, they get very big and just eat and eat. I have a pair of larvae hatched in June 2004, I'm looking forward to seeing beetles sometime mid-late 2007 !

Heres on of them.....

that is honestly one of the most disturbing and awesome things i have ever seen on AB. you could easily make some bucks selling picks to National Enquirer and telling them they hatched out of pods that came out of your neighbor's butt after aliens visited

Very very cool picture

If the Grub is indeed bigger then the beetle then maybe its a good thing they stay in Grub stage for a very long time:D

Eric

(btw are those black holes in the side of the grub there to give the insect Air?)

Yes - those are the spiracles through which air enters the trachea inside the body. Despite being buried fairly deep underground they do need air, it is possible to suffocate things like this if the container they are kept in is too airtight.

I've got some on the go at the moment. I bought 10 smallish L2 Dynastes hercules lychi (DHL) larvae at the Oct 2004 AES show at Kempton Park in the UK. They fitted comfortably into a 35mm film container at that point so they were probably about 6-8 weeks old . I saw the first signs of the larvae pupating in April this year and found the first beetle in June.

I now have 6 adults (5 females & 1 male), and 2 more male larvae still to pupate. I lent a pair of the larvae to a friend and these have not pupated yet, I think a 9 month life cycle is a bit optimistic, think more 20-24 months

They don't seem to appear very often at the AES show, the guy I got mine from had some Dynastes hercules lychi and D.neptunus larvae from beetles he had imported from Taiwan. He was selling them for £10 each at small L2 but I did a part exchange for some Xylotrupes larvae I had and got them for a fiver each. I only spotted him towards the end of the show and bought the 10 DHL larvae he had left, though I really should have bought some of the Dynastes neptunus too. I've seen wild caught adult pairs offered for sale a few years ago at about £80 per pair, silly prices and I'm wary of buying wild caught adults, you never know how long they will live for when you get them home.

I was hoping to have some larvae to take to the show this year myself (If I have excess stock I run a small stall some years) but my I have only seen my females mating in the last few days, so I don't want to go digging in the tank for a few more weeks yet. They all seem to be feeding well, between the six of them in there they have demolished 2 large bananas in 2 days and will get another today. I'm hoping they they are busy laying and I will end up with a good number of larvae in the end. There is an intermittant thread on these beasties running on Bugnation at http://bugnation.myfreeforum.org/ftopic1411.php, if I have any sucess I will update the thread. Hopefully, if they lay as well as my Xylotrupes did the other year I will have spare stock.
