I spotted a couple of large mealworm beetles in my pede cage. It's a 9" Puerto Rican that stays buried (if it's even still alive). Anyone feed their pedes these beetles, or should I remove them?
The problem with feeding mealworms is that they tend to burrow into the substrate and not get eaten. Some animals don't like the taste of darkling beetles and may not eat them. The only danger would be if the beetle were to nibble on the centipee during a molt.
There are these giant darkling beetles in the SW that I assumed nothing would eat because they were so foul-smelling, but I noticed that some Colorodo River toads I collected pooped out the elytra of these same beetles! Apparently, it's a good defence against some predators, but not all.
