Actually euthanasia with humans is just a little bit illegal. That'd be assisted suicide, and I'm sure that you've heard of Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Or perhaps not.

Well a lot of people don't agree with that being illegal. It is legal in my state under the Oregon's Death with Dignity Act.
I don't think it should be illegal anywhere, but that is a conversation for another day. :)

I would suggest you not anthropomorphize a tarantula. It does not have the same mental capacity that a human does.
What's more "painful" for a T? To have a couple of fangs pierce your carapace or be put into a freezer where you get cold and go to sleep?

My T's get preserved for scientific purposes...if you don't want to do that, it's fine. But it works and is more "humane" than putting them in a jar and dropping chemicals in there to kill them. Sometimes it's not practical to wait for a male to die on his own. If I wait and then he dies and I can't get him into a jar of alcohol relatively quickly his DNA will begin to degrade and the body will decompose (defeating the purpose of preserving them).

Perhaps a discussion to get the watering hole riled up.

Would you stick an old man in a freezer because he's just getting weaker every day?;P

I would stick an old man in the freezer before I stuck any type of animal in one... thats just me though....

One thing you all have to remember (and as hamfoto touched on) is that tarantulas are not have the same mental capacity as a human. Furthermore, their nervous, digestive, circulatory, etc. systems are all more primitive than ours are. The general consensus is they do not feel pain like we do, and freezing any type of invertebrate is considered a humane way to kill them.

So now, I would like anyone who said freezing a tarantula is horrible and shouldn't be done, etc. etc., to please let us all on the boards know whether or not they have ever fed a live mouse or rat or lizard or snake or any type of vertebrate to their beloved spiders. Speak up.

And even feeding crickets, roaches, mealworms, etc...how do you think they feel when they are being impaled and mauled and completely mangled while they are still alive? How often do they die instantly? Never.

So let's hear what you guys have to say. PunkPrestige and robc, I'm talking to you.

Dude, my female GBB (Lela) got a better ACT score than me. If I'd only had more time!

When my GBB male (Leon) got DS and then curled, he was still twitching. It looked like he was in pain. I put him in the freezer then burried him next to my rat (Helanea) with a large stone marking his grave. I felt that was the most dignified and quick option.

I think that squishing might be faster, but who wants to squish their t?

Not me.

Ha. Rhyme.

Time.

I can't stop. :wall:

Woah!!! I never said that putting a T in the feezer was bad, I said killing a male because he was old (not suffereing) is bad, I had to put a Gravid Blondi in the freezer because she was suffering....rob

I have no issue with euthanizing a past-prime mature male and the preserving him, especially for scientific benefit. First of all, it's better than watching his slow decline, second of all, I understand the importance of scientific study. I'd do it.

HOWEVER, many pet owners do not have the desire or connections that would make preservation of a past-prime MM useful. If that's the case, I like how Ryan lets his MMs live out their lives.
