As far as I know, the only wood familys to be cautious of are the pines/aspens/cedar. I think as long as you give the wood a nice bake in a 350 oven, or a go around in the micro for a few minutes, you should be ok.
just watch for mold. Most (not all) maple is pretty hard, so should be ok. Silver and Norway maple are pretty soft and will rot in a heartbeat. Stay away from oak and walnut (tannins/toxins) as well as the pines/cedars. Lilac is good, manzanita is super hard as well. Grapevine is cool too and great for arboreals. Older the better for all.
