Huh? They're not endangered or anything, there's no harm in bringing one in.

I don't know why an imaginary literary character would have anything to do with what you can and can't have as pets.

Catching one is your best bet. The fancy ones like the diabolica are illegal in Canada..Dave from AveryExotics is going to have some in sometime in the next month...they're Canadian species so they're not as intensely beautiful...but they also won't get seized :)

Tell your Dad to actually read his Bible:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1: 26

What better dominion than to have an animal as a pet?

diabolica are fairly difficult to take care of. If you havn't kept mantids before that may be a bad investment. I would try and keep a less exotic species first and do a lot of research...I apologize if i'm assuming a lot.

I found those green mantids in meadows and grass fields around august-september here. I'm not sure what species it is. There are also browns. Lol to your religious dad. If there was a god I'm sure he would be pissed at they way he's been represented.

You should suggest to your father that you want to gain a "more profound appreciation of the beauty of 'god's' creation"

Mabye your dad would rather see them wild, idk everyone has there own opinion of life I guess. If its that much of a hassle get something else there are lots of cool insects in the hobby you could have.

That makes me laugh - God didn't intend them to be pets. That's just an excuse not to get one. Well what else is religion for other than making excuses?

I'll see you in class on Tuesday {D

and now there is a new excuse : it's cruel to give a mantis a good home, even if they were bred in captivity according to my step mom

Maybe the religious references/opinions/beliefs should be kept to ourselves, hmm?

To the OP: As long as you're living with your parents, you have to live by their rules. Unfortunately, they may not always be what you want, but that's the way it goes.

Once you get out on your own and have to pay a mortgage, electric, water, sewage, credit cards, car insurance, car payments, etc., etc., then you can get that mantis you always wanted.

There are worse things in the world; be thankful for what you have already. :)

Oh come on... just one more... ;)

Hey 'mantisman'... just tell your dad it's a praying mantis... get it?! oh man... I kill me...

Seriously though, when I wanted my first critter I was told "no" several times.. then one day I just brought one home (emp scorp)... my Dad thought it was very cool and after seeing it asked if I'm going to get it a mate. But maybe they'd already been softened up as I was constantly bringing home animals I'd find.

Perhaps your parents' main concern is that it wouldn't be taken care of properly. If you show them ahead of time that you've done your research, and you know how to care for it, and you show a passion for it, then I think eventually they'll be swayed.

Hey, it's better than showing an interest in drugs.
