I like the facebook page of the store where this took place. I've done business with the guy.
They'd been posting about giving a free ball python morph to whoever could eat the most B. discoidalis. When I saw the title of this thread I knew it had to have been him.
So unfortunate. Should be interesting to see how this affects the store.

Methinks MSNBC is desperate for flash and splash to report on.

Probably :)
Sadly this might throw a even more negative shadow over roaches,

I know that when you get allergy tests, roaches are one of the allergens tested for. Regardless of worms or roaches causing the problem, I put my money on an undiscovered allergy as the culprit.

Authorities don’t believe Archbold, 32, suffered an allergic reaction to the insects, which are eaten all over the world.

“He was inhaling the cockroaches so fast to win the contest that he probably choked on shell shards,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous. “They (investigators) are looking at the speed he ate them. Roaches are pretty dry and their shells pretty hard. He probably didn’t chew the roaches properly.”

That would make sense.

He was doing this for a free boa. It seems to me that this guy reallly loved snakes. I hope his pets find a good new owner.

Hey guys, I was there. It was an exciting contest. Fun stuff. Yeah, he was winning the snake for his friend, not for himself, he was going to sell it. He literally was shoving them down his throat. There was a point where he stuck his hand down his throat. Not only that, but after, you could tell he NEEDED to throw up, and he kept holding it it.

The roaches were alive, and I wouldn't be shocked if some where alive inside him, he was barely chewing, mostly shoving. His death will probably be blamed on SHOVING roaches down his throat.

Amazing contest, and amazing deals. Got a leopard gecko for 11$ that night.

So, did you see him collapse?

That's insane. He probably suffocated on tiny bits of their exoskeletons IMO. We'll find out soon. If anyone finds out first please share!

Honestly, he seemed just a little sick, what you would expect from someone who just finished eating roaches. It looked like he really really needed to throw up, but just wouldn't let it happen, I walked inside to buy my gecko, and when I came out, big commotion. I pretty much missed everything
