m balfouri venom potency

How exactly potent IS the M. Balfouri's venom? I came across various answers of "just sweats no biggie" to "IT IS SUPER BAD YOU CAN BE HOSPITALIZED" without saying what the symptoms are.

What would happen if I get bitten by one? What should I do? And no I haven't gotten bit. I have to rehouse 2 M. Balfouris I got yesterday! They are my first OW. I am just nervous. Breeder said the Ts themselves are calm/skittish but obviously don't be like a chimp and start grabbing them lol

I haven't seen a bite report for M. balfouri anywhere online, but there was just one published by the Journal of Emergency Medicine yesterday. I can't get full text without paying $30, but the abstract lists perioral paresthesia (mouth numbness), generalized muscle cramps, and rhabdomyolysis...

I don’t know my recent hands off approach makes it hard to get bitten .
You only have to go to the hospital if it gets bad. For the pain.
odds of getting bitten are pretty low, as long as you don’t panic . Escapes are much more likely.

Thing is, even if people get bit and don’t have crazy reactions, does not mean your reaction will be the same.

with tarantulas that do not have medicaly significant venom, the possibility of mechanical damage is true and aweful. Necrosis of flesh is always to be considered.

i would go down the: avoid getting bit approach. I don’t want to be bit by any of my tarantulas. Even my NWs.

i have two P murinus. And trust me, the lengths i take to make sure i eliminate risk, is baffling. Still, there is always a possibility.

M balfouris are known to flee first. That is what people like to say about them and observe in general. Bite reports? Not many eh? Why? Maybe they truely choose to flee first.

Compared to other OW and baboons, their venom MIGHT be less medicaly significant. They are still OW.

You could choose to take one for the team and test it.

that is sarcasm of course.

That being said, stressful situations and being cornered, can get them defensive. And personal tarantula personality.

learn to speak Tarantula. You should have no problems them.

This is why it's a better idea to work with fast defensive NW's first like Psalmopoeus. If you're nervous and worried mistakes can happen. It's easier if a mishap occurs with a P. irminia for example and you get tagged vs an OW and getting tagged.

Once you do enough rehouses with those type of NW's then you can be calmer gravitating to OW's.

Tapinauchenius rehouses will teach you what teleporters are all about but pose no real threat to you.

When you've done enough work around them you gain some confidence in moving on to OW's. Never be over confident even with NW's but it helps remaining calmer when working with OW's.

The speed they can run are crazy, they can escape anytime if something goes wrong and they bolt. .. but for me they were generally fine hiding in there tubewebs or general area of it.
I had h Mac’s and s cal bolt more then Psalmopoeus. But any can do it, at any time.

I think if you're looking for a good OW species to start with, M. balfouri is a great choice. They are really just skittish and would dive into a burrow/hide/web at the first disturbance. The only one that I ever got a threat pose from was an MM that wasn't pleased with me pushing him into a vial for shipping. I don't know how potent their venom is, and I agree that the lack of bite reports is due to their reluctance to bite. The people that have been bitten by one must have been doing something so stupid they were too ashamed to make a public report about it...

True true. I learn from hands-on experience (not tarantulas I mean in general, like learning how to do a task at a new job or something).

There are many things you can do to eliminate the possibility of an escape or being bitten. But you can't erase the possibility of them bolting before you get those barriers in place lol. Whenever the enclosure is opened, there's a chance of bolting. Thus far, I've had good experiences but it can go sideways. I mainly keep Poeceletheria slings, juvies, adults for OW. Compared to many other OW species, they are tame. But, i don't treat them like that. I've learned alot on AB and from a friend. But M Balfouri from what I've heard are a great entry into OW sp.

Creating multiple barriers is a good strategy. It gives you some piece of mind. If one fails there is another barrier, and another barrier. As many as you need to feel comfortable really, and eliminate your T being hurt or worse. It isn't necessarily the fact that they are going to bite you, it's more about the direction their headed. You don't want them on your head. After talking to a breeder who got bitten by an adult Female P Met, I can say that is one experience I can do without.

If you have the husbandry dialed in, things should be relatively OK for the most part. Not to say nothing crazy will ever happen. But if they have a good place to hide, they will usually pick that over being consumed by a 5-6' human lol

Yeah if I had a pokie I’d have to keep it upstairs, the basement is wide open. For now I don’t have any arboreals atm.

Cages lined up is the easiest. Just let them walk in. After learning about the bag method, it's super easy. Cages lined up, bag over the old cage. Gently coax your T with a bamboo stick, make sure the seal between Cages are closed. Once the T is in, slide a piece of poster board between Cages. Wait for T to settle down in new enclosure and lock the cage up. Or you can try to coax them up if they are small enough and just seal the bag placing it in the new one. Or create a tunnel from the top leading to the new one. My Irminia appreciated that one. Took less than 5 minutes.

Pokies are generally easier to cup if you have a large enough cup because they flatten out. No way i'd do it with a shallow container though. It's practical in alot of cases, but not entirely necessary in my case.

Front access isn't good. Your T will refuse to come out. May work good for Avics. But not psalmos or pokies.
