they also have more teeth than any other land animal, as far as i know..in comparing the dozens of skulls i have..the oppossum has much larger canines in proportion than any others i have.

Very cool. How are oppossum's temperment wise? I know nothing about them, and they definitely seem like they could give a heckuva beatin' if they were so inclined.

very sad scene...when i left home this afternoon i saw a dead animal on a road less than a mile from my house. judging from the freshness of the animal, or what's left of it, i'm pretty sure it's this guy...RIP buddy...:(

they are foul tempered..but not aggressive.
if you mess with them they could deliver a good bite.
trust me..when they hiss at you and show their teeth and they have snot running out of their nose nd drool coming out of their mouth, you will usually leave them alone.

i think most of it is defensive..never heard of them attacking anyone.
they are rather poor sighted and will sometimes walk right next to you before they realize that they are near.

If raised in captivity they can be well behaved.

They sometimes pop up on suppliers lists and the keepers I have spoken with said that they can be tame. To another opossum though, that is a different story. The same animal that escaped and was found sleeping in a bed with the owner's daughter was found a different morning in the female's cage. He had entered her cage and beat her up a bit. I wonder why that guy had so much free run of the house. I never asked that part.

I've heard short-tailed possums make pretty good pets. They are alot smaller then that fellow in the picture though.

Possums are ok temperment wise some are more aggressive then others especially bores (males). But raccoons are more aggressive and my gramps pick em up all the time by the tail and never has gotten bit.

Anyone else hear a banjo? ;)
Maaaannn.....all I can say is: CROCKPOT + Michigan's Upper Penninsula.
They DO make good eatin'..... so do raccoons, bears, and even porcupines --- if you know your way around a kitchen! You city-kids think the only meat worth eating is beef and chicken....you're missing out!
(Have you ever been in a 4star rest. and ordered the "bush rabbit"? It's very expensive....it's also MUSKRAT!) LOLOL

*and the banjo's fade in the background...*;P

HAHAHAHA!!!!! See you after the heart attack......

I can see why you don't like the venison in Texas, though...the flavor changes according to what they've been feeding on. Here, we have mostly corn and beans...the upper penninsula deer taste more like the pines and acorns...so we hunt down in the "mitten"....
Seriously, though --- game meat is better tasting and WAY healthier than "store bought".....that stuff only tastes like what you marinate it in. {D
