I bought a 20x20x20cm tank for vibe...I filled it with substrate from the old plastic tank almost to the top. I added moss for decoration and a bit of old web in a starter burrow... The spider made it's home on the moss....
Oh is that a mesh lid I see lol.
There advised against, T's can chew through them and get there little feet caught.
They are easy to replace though just get Perspex with some holes drilled for ventilation. Or to be fancy there are sellers that make custom tops for these setups, just have a look on Google.

Ceratogyrus love to web up and create their own intricate system of tunnels and chambers, so your T might be starting on the moss, but it will soon have hideouts all over the enclosure. Great species!

im starting to want to experiment with mesh tops. I don’t have glass yet, but for some reason, i am wondering on how many experiences to say its Bad.

Daves uses mesh so often. Its not that i just want to follow that persons advice, its because i wonder what led to accidents.

if sub was right level, then how bad could
mesh be? This is for another thread of course.

i think its cool @Mushusmum how your tarantula made use of the moss. I look forward to seeing what it will do next. Like @NMTs said, i have a feeling its not the end of this adventure!

First off it’s considerable. But most importantly the aspect many of us old croneys say is that, any amount of known and avoidable risk, such as woven mesh lids , is too high when it comes to their health and well being. Why even subject them to it when you know that they can and will get their tarsal claws stuck which can lead to fatal results. If it’s a known risk and can be avoided, then why not just take a few very simple steps to remedy the situation?

100% agreed.

i definitely look at NON WOVEN mesh.

with glass options here, we only have exoterra. So i have been on stand by, because nothing annoys me more, then needing to buy “extras”.

is the tarantula community that small? Is there no way we can get something international going, with a hub in Canada, USA and UK? And somewhere in the middle, through community, get to everyone else? I mean inflation and taxes sos. Can’t we find a way to have a set price... benefit over profit? Something completely radical for a change.

anyways, i had a moment there with the whole mesh thing.

you are 100% right. I wouldnt subject a living being to dangerous housing.

its just very annoying.

i can see more people getting into tarantulas, then cats and dogs, in the near future. We could use more curated supplies. That are not “niche”.

It's not all types of mesh tops that are bad, but there are multiple cases of Ts chewing through some. I had a T Albo, back when they were still Brachypelma that got 2 legs caught and lost them in a mesh top, ever since I just refuse to use any mesh tops for T's.

Exo tera lisd have a bad mesh it is sort of bendy and the gaps are wrong and anything stuck will struggle to pull free. But on special made lids the mesh is less flexible so the holes don't flex and the size mens legs won't get stuck easily

I have a few zilla cages and never seen a. T get stuck on the mesh lid. Although I rarely see them climb to the mesh.

its really just the fact that it is woven wires that overlap with each other while constructing the mesh, where tarantulas can get their tarsal claws stuck inbetween the weaves and be unable to free themselves from this, leading to lost legs, or worse.
