My thoughts on shipping...

I've been shipping reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, and insects, for years and years.
I've used all the available services including Delta Dash.
The worst possible service is Airborne express, in my experience. At first Airborne Exp. did a good job, got there very quick, but they were not cheap. I got an acct. with them thinking that it should become cheaper. I didn't. I was still getting charged $30 for packages, even with smaller than normal Dim. weight. Once I recieved a bill for $70, for shipping a package to TX. Delta Dash is only like $65! Over time, I started hearing about carrier complaints, on the destination end. Once I sent $1500 worth of rare Poecs. (rufilata, subfusca, pederseni, etc.) to a friend. He didn't get the package until 5pm the day it was supposed to arrive by noon. No big deal right? It was his girlfriend who brought the package in at 5pm, after she got home from work. The package was placed on the sidewalk.
They screwed up the next five deliveries after that too. So I stopped using them. Hah! They even sent me $5 dollar certificate to use on the next ship, 'cause they wondered where my business went.
Now, I ship USPS. The most reliable and cheap method. When I was breeding Rhacodactylus geckos I shipped thru them ALOT. The clerk knows what I
do for a hobby, so she usually takes extra care of the box. I don't know exactly when it was the USPS started to use the regulation against the shipping of arachnids, but then I was shipping them with the clerk's knowledge that there were arachnids in the box.
Now when I ship arachnids, it's always "more frogs or geckos", which are legal.
$21.05 is the usual cost for me, shipping in the winter. Winter requires bigger boxes (don't want the heat pack to overwhelm the box).
Shipping in fair weather usually costs $18.75.
I mark the boxes "live harmless lizard", "fragile", "keep from extreme temps", perishable".
It's a rare occurance that I loose an animal to shipping. I can only think of one time I sent out 10 spiderling P. rufilata, in the dead of winter, where only 3 or 4 died. That was so long ago.
I pack as if I'm expecting the worst.

Hmmm, I was beginning to wonder earlier when it was said that scorps are illegal through USPS. I shipped a scorp with USPS once. The attendands did freak out, but they went through with it anyways.

I've noticed that "gay" can be a colloquialism for "stupid".

I've shipped usps not knowing that shipping arachnids were illegal. When they ask me what's in the box I said, "spiders", they didn't know what to say. The lady asked one of the guys who's been working there for years and he said they allow it, so they know me when I go in as the spider guy. I guess if they ever ask me again I'll say they're dried.

Hmm,,Airborne.

Hi all.

Well, I had a bad experience with Airborne and that was that they didn't show up before 5 pm the day after ship out, as they are supposed to and I had started to "hunt" the pack down over phone and they even asked if further ( read: extra next day) delay was "ok" and I said, "well, there's live animal in there" and the phone person "jumped" at the other end and connected with me some other person for further "hunting" and 6:30pm the pack showed up and up came a driver with an "irritation expression" all over his face.

I have got all my other delivery done now with UPS and they show up steady as a rock, next day, around, between 11 am to 1 pm.

Well,,this is probably like talking substrate, there are as many opinions as experience with it:D
