I got my G. aurostriata at 2" as a 'probable' female in july, since then with two molts its grown to 4". I was surprised at this growth rate, but I'm hardly complaining. I usually feed 3-5 crickets a week.

For a big docile tarantula you can't go far wrong with a Grammostola aureostraita, the majority of them seem to be very docile. I'd agree your parahybana was probably an exception to the rule as my young male will happily throw threat poses and kick hair.

Members of the Grammostola genus also seem less likely to kick hair than Brachypelma as well.

Another option is a G.pulchra! The females of this species grow quite big an bulky but are usually very docile as well as looking good.

Here's my big female...

My most docile was also my pulchra, who is now passed. I think that T or another parahybana are good choices. My p. cancerides, who ususally just ignores me, actually attacked her water dish as I was putting it back in with her after cleaning it. Took me by suprise, she has never done THAT before! There are alot of people here on the boards who have had blondis they could handle, but as far as defensiveness, mine 9" female is worse than my cancerides. But I know not all are like that. Crunchie, I love that pic, makes me miss mine and want to get another! I also knew someone who owned an E campestratus, and that T was pretty docile also.....it was around 5" last time I saw it. Not a large T, but very calm! Good luck with whatever you decide to go with, there are many wonderful Ts out there :)

Huh, did I really read above that Acanthoscuria and Lasiodora genuses were included here, in a topic about docile species????? :?

I know that some mature individuals are reported docile, but it's a minority. And, believe me, between 2" and 5", mine was really aggressive. And I mean teleporting from one end of the tank to the other OBT-style to bite whatever moves!!!

I think he means that they left it on too high a temperature for too long and the spider was killed by overheating.

Back on topic, count one more vote for G. aureostriata. A buddy of mine has one and it is very docile, even more than my rosie, and they can get up to 8 inches in legspan.

I think he's had his T already for a while (old thread syndrome ;) )

Legspan

I have a Lasiodora parahybana that I handle daily. I use her in my aducational shows and she has a legspan a little over 10 inches!
