So me and my buddy found an amazing basement suite that could have been ours. Over 1600 sq.feet. Cable tv, high speed internet, air conditioning, dishwasher, huge bathroom, fireplace, patio with lakeview, super nice area, close to work, it was absolutely perfect. Out of a few prospects, he said we could have the place. After we got all excited, we ended up having to turn it down because he would not allow tarantulas, He said we could have a dog or cat, but nothing exotic, Wheres the fun in that?:?

Why tell the landlord about your tarantulas? I mean realy, what he does'nt know wont bother him and it's not like they would be webbing up the appartment. Just my two cents.

My landlord is cool about the whole invert hobby thing. Of course I didn't tell her about it when I moved in (only had two tarantulas at the time so...). When she found out though it was no problem.
Call the landlord of the place you looked at and tell him after a long time thinking it over you decided to get rid of the tarantulas. Just keep 'em in a closet or something. It's not like they're gonna make noise or poo on the carpet.

When I moved into my apartment, it already came with spiders and roaches. I looked up at the corners of the ceiling and said to myself "hmmm, spiders." I looked down on the floor and saw roaches scurrying about. At the time, I didn't keep spiders and roaches, but I'm not sure I would have felt compelled to tell the landlord that I actually cage some of the same.:?
You might try writing a letter explaining that you will keep your meager collection in an escape proof cabinet and that these pets carry no diseases, and unlike dogs, cats, birds, etc. etc. and so forth, make no noise and have no odor.

So I say be upfront with it, I eventually found a place and the landlord breeds feeder rats so I was in like Flin.
Yeah i figured it was better to be straight up about it, since they do live right upstairs. He was very serious about them not being allowed even after we tried to educate him on the loveable little beasts, and even tried the idea of keeping them either in locked aquariums, or in a locked room, but he still wouldn't go for it. Oh well we are still looken and hopefully will find somethin better. wish me luck haha

when I moved in I told my land lord I had a few Ts and she said ok no big deal and then when she came by and saw I had 30 she turned and said "a few?" so I showed her the web site and pics of people with 100s of Ts. she said my limit was 40. so she was cool about it for only thinking I had one or two to begin with.

I subscribe to the "what they don't know wont hurt them" theory.
What I've been doing is asking this question, "What is your policy on caged pets?" Just don't be specific about what kinds of pets are in the cage. That phrase brings up images of cuddly hamsters and gerbils which ironically could probably do more damage than a tarantula if they escaped but are more widely accepted.
That said, my wife and I are in a tight spot because we didn't do the caged pet question at our current place and they just surprised us with the info that they want to bring someone by to look at the place today while I'm at work.
Could be an interesting evening...

yeah we tried to ask if we could have "pets in aquariums" first of all, but right away he asked what it was. And I can tell from the guys reaction when we asked him, that he would have no tolerance for us if we had of snuck them into the house without asking.

honestly good luck finding a landlord who will be into the idea of u having tons of giant arachnids lol!!!for real most people in general hate spiders to begin with.now when your talking about ones that can reach 10+" in legspan u know there not down

I guess I did'nt think about the possibility that the landlord might decide to have the appartment sprayed with pesticides without your permission. That would be a terrible tragedy. Then again, I don't think that I would like to be renting from the kind of person that would pump my living quarters full of toxic fumes without my permission. In the end, the risk is up to the individual. Personaly, I would probably not tell the landlord about the bugs and make it clear that I was severely allergic to pesticides, and that if the place was ever to be fumigated that I should be given notice so that I could make arrangements to be elsewhere. Taking my T's with me. Just my thoughts. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do. It's just the approach that I would probably take. To each their own.

My solution has been the "what they don't know won't hurt them" doctrine. I'm a college student though, so I don't really have a choice. It's keep them on the DL or lose the lease. The only other solution I've come up with is trying to push a bill through Congress which prohibits Tarantula descrimination:clap: .

both times at this point the managers have said the policy is anything in a cage is not considered a pet.
what happened at the place i live now is next i put on a charming smile and say
"ok... what if i have a pet spider that lives in a cage?"
and my manager at the time said it was fine, just tell the main maintenance guy as he is deathly afraid of spiders.... he will never go in your apt. if you have bugs
then i asked "what about a lot of spiders and stuff?" she said it was fine as long as they were in cages (oops, broke that rule a bunch of times now).
Then i got her to promise to tell me if the apartments were ever going to do any sort of pesticide treatments as it would slaughter my collection and she promised. this is the MAIN BIG GIANT HUUUUGE reason i make it a point to get explicit permission and the "pesticide promise"
it helps if you are like, good at charming ppl, seriously!

my land lord required a deposit for the 2 cats and then i asked about 'aquarium' pets, he said thats fine as long as they stay in their tanks

that is basicly what happened with me except i asked if it would be ok to get a snake she said no then i asked if i could get t's she said how many so i told her one atm moment but i might get a few more then she asked if they would be in tanks and i said yes then she said yes as long as they dont get out...cacoseraph said:

My landlords have no clue I keep numerous tarantulas, roaches, a few geckos, and a millipede.
I called up the office and they said that pets in cages didnt apply to the normal restrictions, and I just left it at that and snuck my babies in.

Hello!
I asked my Landlord if I could keep a cat in my apartment. that was okay, as long it didn`t pee in his garage.
Then i thought...hmm, my spiders and Gecko`s won`t pee in his garage, then they must be alowed.
A big problem is that Reptiles,(like my Leopard Gecko`s) ain`t alowed in Norway under any circumstances. My main problem right now, is that this is a nonsmoking apartment. A rule I Broke the first week
But, we are friends since i do service on his computer equipment for free

I agree with the "What they don't know won't hurt them." I would think that there would be legal issues involved in spraying for pests inside of your apartment when you're not there... unless it said that it was fine for them to do that in your lease, in which I case, I'd move.
Sure, most apartments might spray around outside to keep the pests down, but in your apartment without notice when you're not there in such large quantities that it would kill a tarantula who wasn't being targetted? That couldn't be healthy for a normal pet (dog/cat) or even you if you decided to come home right after.
