My 7 inch L. parahybana's (Bear) abdomen darkened a couple days ago and I think she's about to flip over. She's going to be a good 8 inch + after!

Man these guys grow fast :?

Yeah, thanks. I hope so too :)

I just hope I get to see it this time. She's the one that I always seem to miss. One of those late-night-molters ;)

Yeah, they certainly molt faster than you'd think, don't they? Compared to my brother's geniculata, my parahybana is quite the weed.

As many molt records as I have and seen molt frequency generally slows down as the T gets larger. But, in the case of Bear she's actually molting just as often as she ever has, about every 1 1/2 to 2 months.

Must be the power feeding ;)

Really? And genics are supposed to grow pretty fast aren't they?

if your parahybana's abdomen darkened a few days ago, i highly doubt it is going to moult anytime soon (within the next week or so).

parahybana's DO grow fast, however, i am kind of suspicious about the mouting every one to one-and-a-half months, especially at the seven inches you said your parahybana is.

is the temp unusually warm in its tank? because warmth and power feeding together tend to make a species "grow" faster...

and lastly, are you sure she's a she? have you sexed her? inquiring minds want to know!

She's (been sexed by both Swifty and myself :)) been eating like a horse, and eats everything from adult mice to anoles. I don't really have a set schedule for her, but I usually feed her once a week. But, it's usually a pretty big meal.

And the last time her abdomen darkened she molted 2 to 3 days later. It's been gradually darkening, but now it's near black.

As for temp I keep her around 78-82f as with all my T's.

My T. blondi is growing pretty a fast as well and has begun to fast. Should be a good 9 incher after the molt.

No, actually she's using a weight gainer called Tarantula Gainer 2000 :D

But, she hasn't flipped over yet, so maybe you're right and it may be a few more days.

Hi all,

Just wanted to mention that quirks like this do happen sometimes. I've personally known of a Nhandu carapoensis adult molting twice within a couple months time. The specimen I mention was a fully mature adult female who had been fattened up with crickets and fuzzy rats (larger than pinkie rats, with hair and all). She molted a month before I sent it to a good friend. Shortly after I sent her to him, she molted again. He was unaware she had molted a month prior. We were both very surprised!

Anyway, it DOES happen. Not sure why though.

Best wishes,

Paul

Usually when I get in stock, the wild caughts sometimes come in looking pretty bad (skinny)! So I fatten them up and keep them a while to make sure they're healthy.

I usually feed them as much as they're willing to take, until they're full! Every couple days if need be!

Cheers,

Paul

(I breed rats since I have snakes, so I use the offspring for more than my snakes. The adults I keep as pets and don't feed them out)

Is it an L. parahybana?

And does the abdomen extend down to his feet?

Does he immediately leap on the food?

Cheers,

Paul
