I don't hate them, I just think they are really really really super duper over-hyped.

I mean if I were starting out and bought into this false hype and got my lp...then some months later realized I could have had a geniculata, for example...I'd be pissed looking at my boring greyish t.

I mean, c'mon...Lasiodora...
Versus anything else...

I mean this genic is still a wee one and it already looks better than any photoshopped LP could dream of.

Even the bronzed look of a P. cancerides looks better...and don't get me started on the MMs

I'm just offering the op choices that aren't over-hyped.:D

LPs are fine, as long as you have other, prettier ts, to also look at.
Very nice pictures. :)
Agreed, but I still kind of like to have them around. Maybe it's cause Pamphobeteus are so expensive here.

Just search for the thread. Man, thought everyone saw that one. :D

using what search parameters? If I put gypsy cola in there I will just get a list of all his posts...and I ain't digging through all that, especially considering I have zero idea what I would be looking for.

I don't have severe sensitivity to the urticating hairs... yet.
I've never been haired (flicked at).
Mine do mix the hairs in their webbing - so my only few exposures were technically indirect.
I used tape on hands and arms before thoroughly washing. Still had a couple red spots that itched like crazy for a week or so (almost always wrist area) You can pick up a few just changing out a water dish or upgrading a hide, etc..
My understanding is the more exposure you have -- the more you risk extreme sensitivity to them. Hope I'm wrong.

I'll save you the time. Gypsy was doing maintenance nude and got his nuts haired, not much more to it.

How bad is l.parahybanas urticating hairs?
And how often do they kick hairs?
The hairs are by far the worst out of anything I own and mine seemingly kicks hairs for fun (I only react to Acanthoscurria and Lasiodora hairs, the former are nowhere near as bad).

If you're set on a Lasiodora then get a difficilis instead, they pretty much look the same and IME are far less skittish than the parahybana.

My two adult females don't kick nearly as often as many of my Brachypelma spp. Their setae aren't even half as bad as B. boehmei, at least to me. But my two B. boehmei's kick at every slight disturbance, so there's that.

I think their reputation is similar to T. stirmi - they have a reputation for terrible setae simply because they have so much of it. To me, the worst setae in the hobby come from Euathlus spp., but since they're dwarves, they just don't have much to lay down. Just a thought.
So much of it, and the sheer *size* of the hairs I would assume as well.

They're pretty bad, and they kick very often. They have the same attitude as the A. genic where they try to eat anything that moves, but the difference is that the genic will just walk away when it realizes it's not food. The LP will start kicking hairs at it.
Son you have received a beer rating I'm afraid I'm gonna need to see some identification. Otherwise I'm confiscating that mug of beer.

@cold blood Dude LPs are the best looking tarantula of all time. I've gone through hours of NW tarantula pictures to finally decide on this species as my only example of a large NW terrestrial. Its beauty is in its simplicity: It's a large, dark, majestic spider with a presence. Pamphobeteus with their weird squished butt that's wider that it is lengthwise is truly unsettling to look at. I also feel that Tim Burton colors don't go well with large stocky spiders and metallic colors like bronze is yucky on anything let alone a tarantula. I'm afraid you just don't get aesthetics. :pompous:

Update...

So i got a 4.5" female l.p, the rehousing didnt go so well. I already put her in her new enclosure and when im about to put the lid, she bolted up the tank and fell 3ft high :( shes fine though. Defacated when she fell, maybe coz of the impact. But overall shes fine. Moving okay. No wounds. I hope shes okay. Ill check on her every hour or so :((

But after all that stress for her, didnt even kick hairs. Which is good

She fell 3 feet from inside the enclosure? Can you share some pics of your setup, doesn't sound right. That's way too much height for a terrestrial.

You're missing the most attractive thing about LPs. They grow FAST. "Cool-looking" is completely subjective. Growth rates are not. And I don't know ANY T that grows faster.

That plus the fact that they are hardy and inexpensive makes for a nice T in my book.

Im fond of L.parahybana as well, but they are far from the fastest growing species out there. I have several other sp. that have outpaced my LPs by a long shot.

Theraphosa, Pamphobeteus and some of my Asian arboreals have grown at a much faster rate.

Interesting. I didn't know that there were any that rivaled the growth rate of the LP. Well, at least it's definitely the quickest grower in my collection. Especially when compared to my G. pulchripes. Cripes, that thing takes its time.

Hmmm, someone needs more large NWs.:astonished:

Nhandu, Pamphobetus, Phormictipus, Theraposa...in fact it would be easier to name giant ones that grow slower...I think Xenesthis and some of the large Grammostols don't grow as fast (although they do as slings)..that's about all I can think of.

Get into large arboreals and could name a bunch that make the Lasodora growth look glacial...like Psalmopeous Cambridgei for instance.

About the same time as my cam sac molted to 2i, I got my current LP (freebie as they all have been) at the same time...the LP was about the same 3/4" size...today the LP is 3.25"...the 4 cams I have left are all big enough to eat several LPs of that size (and they would)...I think the smallest cam is almost 5".

The growth rates of Lasiodora are nothing special, its all false hype to sell spiders when someone has a sac of 2-3K LPs....just like that 10" pipe dream they try to sell people on.

I have one LP at about 5" and no hair kicking ever except when disturbed by maintenance in heavy pre-molt. However, make sure whatever enclosure you are using doesn't have any mesh/screen vents because it will chew through them in a hurry. Only bald part of my LP is the chelicerae, it hangs upside down the lid to its tub and tries to poke more ventilation holes with its fangs all the time. Sounds like ice picks going down a chalkboard XD Always eats like a champ and never hides, mom (who doesn't like spiders much) nicknamed her the Fat Cow for a reason :D You'll enjoy yours but like others said, always nice to have other more colorful ones to look at too. Like a few GBBs! Perfect shelf companions to your LP!
