I remember my Mom bought me a G rosea when I was 14. I put it in a 10 gallon tank with like 1" of substrate. It lost a leg during a molt, and I gave it to my local shop hoping they'd know what to do. Internet was around but they had super limited resources on tarantula husbandry at the time. I didnt have a smart phone or a fast internet connection lol.

I grew up being interested by true spiders around the house. I would hold orb weavers, throw ants in garden spider webs. Kind of messed up now that I think about it lol

I bought a book from a catalouge called "Tarantulas of the World" or something like that. Id just stare at the pictures dreaming I could own a Cobalt Blue or Singapore Blue one day.

Fast forward years, and now I own most of those T's in that book. I hope I can find a female O violacepes though. I blew my opportunity when I had it, I forget what T i bought instead.

My family said, "what are you going to do when you meet a nice girl and want to settle down?"

My response, "Keep the spiders."

Teach her how amazing spiders are if she doesn’t already know.

It was exciting for 5 minutes. Then fear crept in because other parents said they were scary and ugly… then they were just interested in poking the feeders.

Kids are probably high maintenence. I have no human kids lol
Kids are SOOOOO high maintenance, even the least needy ones. I only have one and he drives me bonkers on a regular basis. Taking care of my Ts only sets me back about 3-5 hours a week, depending on the husbandry required. With a kid, it’s 24/7!!!

She use to be very arachnophobic. Now, whenever I see her she takes a peak around the room. Her favorite atm is my B smithi lol. I get frustrated because out of everything, she goes with the quintessential poster child of the hobby lol.

I can’t even afford to take care of me, odds are I’ll never have kids or be able or afford them if it’s even possible to have them. My parents dogs 🐶 or cats 🐱 might be the closest I get. My Ts are so low maintenance I could not consider them children but they are definitely 8 legged super pets!!!. I don’t understand how people can afford kids or to survive at all. But I already got a thread on that I won’t go off topic here.

My friend has over 250 T's. I dont know how he does it. That isnt all of his animals either. Steve Irwin reincarnated. At my most, I would have a tough time if I had kids. I had to scale back just to make more time for art.

I don’t have children but during a check up on my Ts my stepdaughter asked if any could be handled. I said you shouldn’t really handle them, but then we sat her on the bed and I let my G. Pulchripes juvenile crawl out and into her hand and it immediately tried to just take shelter between fingers 😂. Now she wants a jumping spider and who am I to say no?

when I got my first Ts I never knew about this site until like 5-7 years later.
I’ve never got a jumping spider I’m too sad they don’t live long. ☹ but I’ve lost Ts from old age too so I guess it’s no different. And some just died for no reason or were sold to me sickly.
