Well i have some experience with aggresive monitors. So if you need a home for one Dave, I`m interested.

I miss my old savanah, He was just over two and a half feet.

Actually, I spoke with a gentleman a short while back about keeping Gators and Crocs as he does sell them to the public. His whole outlook on the growth of them is to simply take them back after they reach a certain length and supply the purchaser with another and upon it's reaching a certain length, again, will accept it back with replacement with a new youngster. After the third, he does the same, and so forth for up to five times, final being the last acceptance in return and you are out of a "pet", in a nutshell. He sells them for around $75, if I recall correctly. He does things this way because he doesn't like the idea of someone releasing them into the wild in a non-native habitat for them once they get to big to keep as pets as well. I like the way he deals and may soon get a Gator for myself. heheh I agree with Dave, I wish people would dump scorps off on me. *lol*

EDIT: And Baphomet,
Thanks for not forgetting about little ole' me.

adios,
edw. :D

I'll keep that in mind next time someone tries to get rid of one. I love my sav .. he is a bit edgy still, but is calming down nicely. He is fast approaching two feet now.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi everyone,

First of all, I speak french, so it's hard for me to expressed my self the way I want to.

This one goes to skinheaddave:

I understand the way you feel about someone that is getting an Androctonus and didn't know about the Opistophtalmus Glabrifrons, but the problem is when I bought my Opistophtalmus, it was label as a Tri-Color Burrowing. Almost every care sheets that I found about the Tri-Color didn't mention that this species can warn by hissing. After some research that I did, I found that my new scorp is a Mozambique Hissing Scorpion.
The Mozambique Hissing Scorpion wasn't really my next wish but when I saw it in a pet shop in my area and at a great price...I had to buy it, but this is not going to work like that for my next WISH.

I really did my home work before ordering my Black Fat Tail. Don't worry, but thank for worrying, it show that you care about peoples who share the same passion. Thank!!!

Cheer to all and sorry for using the word "play".

You can't rely on the discression of the pet store owner because they have to make a profit and if they turn you down the next guy probably won't.
This is a pet-peeve of mine.

Too many times shop owners who offer these types of animals either have very little experience with the animal itself, or do not take the time to talk to the customer about the animal, it's care, potential size, housing requirements, temperment, ect...

My wife and I always talk to the customer about ANY animal they are about to purchase...we provide detailed information about the animals' potential adult size, agressiveness, food items (and associated cost of feeding) and so on.

Have we lost a few sales to the guy down the street?

Yes.

But we have the satisfaction of knowing that when we sell an animal to a new owner, we have the satisfaction of knowing that very few mis-matches will occur; resulting in a better informed owner and a well cared for snake.

Here are some other rules my wife and I follow in regards to snake/arachnid purchases:

•NO animal sales to minors
•NO large Boid species to anyone under the age of 18.
•NO large Boid species sales to first time or novice owners.
•NO "hot" or medically significant arachnid sales to first time or novice owners.
•ALL "hot" or medically significant arachnid sales require the signing of a release form stating, in CLEAR language, the dangers of owning such animals.
•Although it is now law in California, we have for years provided a care-sheet for all animals sold.
•Because we breed all the snakes we sell on the premisis, we also show a customer the actual parents (thus the adult size) of the snake they are inquiring about.

We also (through a contractural agreement), provide new owners with a 75% off coupon to our local vet (who happens to specialize in reptilian care) for a initial preventitive care check-up of any animal purchased from our shop; which includes a fecal exam, and rudimentary bloodwork.

This has worked well for the both of us (our shop and Dr. R. Turner). He sees more of our pet owners return for annual check-ups, and we have the assurance of a clean bill of health from a certified reptilian veterinarian that we sell quality, healthy reptiles.

It truely saddens (and angers) me when some knob walks through the door of our shop with a large reptile that they purchased elsewhere because they can no longer care for it (it's too big, too mean, costs too much to feed, ect.).

It angers me for a few reasons:

1. They were not properly informed about the animal by whomever sold it to them.

2. They took absolutely NO initiative to learn about thier animal prior to purchasing.

3. It confirms that there are many out there who do not deserve to own any animal.

...we just "rescued" a 4' Surinam that the previous owner purchased from a private party. It had a respiratory infection, infectious stomotitus (mouthrot), severely dehydrated, and was not feeding; and he couldn't handle it any more..."what a stupid pet" was his reply.

Oh, did I mention he had it housed in a wire rabbit cage, with NO heat, on the front porch?

...yeah..."stupid" pet.
