Wayne, don't you have any of those in OK? The males are a lot harder to spot, so she'll just be with you to the end if you don't get a male somewhere, somehow. And yes, these are great spiders! I take extra care of them in my garden, try not to destroy webs when watering, etc. The kindergarten kids loved the ones I brought in last year. Spider-love early!

Beautiful!
The markings on the abdomen look like alien heads on top of each other.

Just wanted to point that out.

Those ARE alien heads residing on her.... this is California!! {D

Draken, I went to the pet store and Rob just handed her to me. He said a customer had caught it here in Moreno Valley and brought it to him. He also said he's cut me a KILLER deal on a blue fronted Amazon parrot, one he wouldn't do for ANYONE!!

Great job Elizabeth, get 'em while they're YOUNG!!!

Lucky girl let it go in the corner of your house and throw crickets into the web it makes. Their awesome spiders...

It's a "she", I tell you! Rmph! ;)

Here's a link to Mr. Argiope, with lots of pics sent in from Argiope lovers. Not all the Argiope shown are Argiope aurantia, but, about 8 pics down (not counting red x pics), and then pics 10 and 11 down, you will see the female and the male. The male is quite a bit smaller, significantly different. Wayne, maybe by this late in the year, you will get a female that's been with a male already anyway. (And there's a pic in there, too, of a female with an eggsac.)

I would set her free where she was found so she can mate instead of having her live inside a home and eventually die of old age.

Nice specimen you have there.

after a summer of looking, me and my girlfriend caught one, and the next day she caught one all by herself! I love this spider so much, and now it has sentimental value for me. she also caught one that looks identical in shape, but slightly different colors, maybe it is a male, or imature.

BTW, has anyone seen Stormcrow around?

Terri, I hope you don't mind me answering this here, but yes I do have them here Elizabeth. In fact, the one I have now in an arboreal type setup is a male. You guys see where I'm going with this, right? I've talked to several people who've kept them as pets for over 5 years, which is much better than their average lifespan in the wild, as here in Oklahoma, they die after the first frost.

Oh and by the way Terri...you are the best! ;)
