Looks like a mature male P cavimanus to me. Color doesn't matter too much.

Kind of looks like a pic I've seen of what somebody was calling P. militaris too, esp. the look of the chela. But I don't know if what I saw was P. militaris either, because I'm not sure if they knew either. This IDing of Pandinus with thinking it's this or that has gotten kind of crazy lately so I wouldn't be 100% sure it's cavimanus yet.

It appears as though the 3rd and 4th tergites have "drifted" apart. This is similar to something I noted right before my P.Imp kicked the bucket a little while ago. I'd keep an eye on him and if you get a female, get him to mate ASAP. My little guy (Curly) lasted about a week once the plates started to separate, and when I posted pictures others mentioned seeing the same thing right before their scorps went to the great Kritter Keeper in the sky. I know you said it may molt soon but all pre-molt bulge I've seen has been evenly distributed across all the tergites, not within just two. Not too sure here but: Pandinus sp. with a dark telson -> mature? I hope I'm wrong :(

Wow. I must've missed that post. I echo dairy. One of my Emps died about 2 - 3 weeks after the tergites by the tail showed separation (so, 2nd & 3rd instead of 3rd & 4th just to keep me honest...doesn't seem like much of a difference). I too thought it was a pre-molt condition because she was a 5 incher and the other Emp I have is a monster 6+incher, but sho nuff...dead within the month. I hope we are wrong in your case.

It's a Cavimanus.

And yes one of the tergites looks deformed.
