"Australian whistling spiders" refers basically to all the species of Aussie T. They all have a reputation for being defensive if provoked, but IME they much rather retreat to their burrows then fight. Selenocosmia crassipes is probably the most aggressive of all Aussie T's. Super quick, very mean if disturbed and will stridulate loudly. Selenocosmia crassipes' venom is very toxic to dogs. In one study, seven dogs bitten all died, one in half an hour. I don't know about the dragging of fish, but there was an instance back in the early 1900's of a Selenotypus plumipes (another Aussie T) killing a juvenile guinea fowl and dragging it some distance back to its burrow. Hope that helps :)

Hey Brettus, do you own any of these? I'd like to know if it's true that adults will spend a good deal of time outside the burrow.

I have a Selenotypus plumipes, and I can't say it spends a good time outside the burrow. It is a gopher and I haven't seen it above ground for months. One of my friends here owned a few S.crassipes, however, and he said that they spent a fair amount of time out the burrow, particularly at night. I remember reading something of Steve Nun's as well where he said that S.crassipes spend a fair amount of time out of the burrow. I imagine it would vary considerably between individuals however. Like I said, mine is a gopher that has never shown much inclination to spend time above ground.

Is this unique to the Australian spiders, or should I worry about other new world or old world spiders?

Okay, i have to ask...

Is that a super engorged tick?? If not, what the heck is that thing??
Thats my new T. Yeah, it fell off our dog last week. I know--Its pretty gross but I figured I'd show a different arachnid this week.

re: the tick...if you suddenly clamped it between your front teeth would it pop down your throat or into your friends face?

Its never good for a dog to be bitten by any species of tarantula. Cats however seem rather immune to it by comparison.

Depends how much bad you've got saved up in your karma account.

so your saying that having only the wriggling rind and no juice is an indication that you will be reincarnated as something better? despite the fact you murdered the tick to begin with? based on that evil thinking mr. shadow you would be well advised never to masticate any bloated parasites!!!
