I was doing some sprucing up shopping and had to buy a new ac filter. I had the bright idea while shopping to throw a linen dryer sheet on the filter when I installed it to have the fresh smell. My wife [actual caregiver to the Ts] said that if we can smell it then it might be dangerous for them. Is there anyone who has done this or something related to light air freshening that has more long term information? I took them out of the ac for the time being, but maaaaan did it smell good here for about 2 minutes o.o

I personally wouldn't risk it. There can be some chemical compounds in fabric softeners that are toxic. I'm not sure exactly how it would affect tarantulas, but in my opinion better safe than sorry.

Get a candle or something if it’s safe I’ve never heard of drier sheets used this way . let the experts help lol. or add some pothos plants near the windows should help the air quality . My Ts don’t make any bad smells not like roaches can if you don’t clean the colony enough. The cat & small dog make more smelly stuff …

Easier to summon than a demon, it is I, the local toxicologist!

Alright, y'all. Dryer sheets work by using the heat of the dryer to 'melt' the fabric softener on the sheets and draw it onto clothing, effectively getting rid of static cling. The compounds within are heat-activated, while the aroma is just a secondary accessory present to give clothing a 'scent' on top of being un-staticed.
When a dryer sheet is placed by an air filter, it doesn't get near hot enough to release the softening compounds (usually fatty acids and sulfates). The only thing released will be the smell, which being clothing safe, should be safe to breathe and have in the air.
If dryer sheets are used around inverts, there is no risk of the softeners getting on them unless there is physical contact or an intense heat to dispel it. However, keeping an eye on the critters for odd behaviors or discomfort is still a good idea.
