Is M. martensii dangerous?

I ask because I've heard dubious at best reports about the strength of their venom. Some sources say they are "potentially dangerous" and others claim they are not lethal but their sting will make life suck for a while.

potentially deadly. it falls at a level 3 out of the 5 levels of the hobby.
C. sculpturatus - the Arizona Bark Scorpion that was, up to 1968, and to an extent still is notorious falls at a level 3 as well.

I tought C. sculp is level 4. Anyways M. martenssii are very...rediculously...docile. I've never had an agry or skittish one.

the exilisculp is 3. 3 is generally enough to make one nauseated and maybe a headache and some numbness (ahem, cougheddycough) but is not generally going to kill someone with a healthy immune system unless they are allergic - but then again, if someone is allergic then their chances of anaphylactic shock goes through the whole range of 1-5.

M. martensii can get aggressive from time to time - as with most scorps, you can't say that an entire sp is docile or aggro because of their unpredictable nature - but yes, they can come off as docile because of their slower nature.

interesting thing about M. martensii is that it's considered an opportunistic burrower but is noted to be arboreal and communal as it is found in the wild living side by side with L. mucronatus in trees.

I wrote a caresheet for these and I also stated that through observation they are both burrowers and arboral. It's nice to see that I wasn't the only one going crazy. Wow, the sting from the C. sculp was ridiculously painful. I mean I felt the effect for weeks. Well this is the caresheet I wrote I couldn't find one myself when I first got this species some years ago. http://scorpionforum.darkbb.com/scorpionforum-s-advanced-caresheets-f33/mesobuthus-martensii-chinese-armor-tailed-t178.htm

To the OP: I've read the sting reports on AB, and it sounds like it would hurt like hell but you'd be ok. That's usually a good place to check before getting a new species.

yeah, but if somebody died from it then they didn't live to post about it so it's only good if you want to know what it felt like to get stung by a specific species that didn't kill the author ;)

now when somebody posts a report about how they died, let me know because I'm all for knowing how it felt. :D

Until a recently deceased sting victim writes a report ;), I'll trust this list, which give three Mesobuthus species, but not martensii.

Considering the genus is listed, it might be a bit more dangerous than I previously thought, but I still wouldn't call it deadly.

Shouldn't Androctonus amoreuxi be on that list?

The word "deadly" is a layman's term that should be reserved for animal reality shows on TV.

There are plenty of people who have been bitten by King Cobra and are still alive. So they could say it wasn't "deadly". I'll pass on that experience, just the same.

Any envenomation could be life threatening. Typically any animal that has venom that causes systemic symptoms, even only occassionally, should be considered potentially life threatening.

Also any injury that immobilizes you could kill you because of complications related to the injury. People have died from a broken arm.

IMO, localized pain and swelling=safe(except for allergy). Any systemic effects=potentially dangerous.
