Is hot glue a good way to plug up holes on a plastic container?

I got a plastic container and just noticed it has holes by the latch joint, I pretty much need an air tight container that I can sterilize

Im trying to grow oyster mushrooms in it since they're the perfect size to start them with, but the container has the holes which will cause a contamination

I did not know you needed a sterile environment for growing mushrooms, learn something new everyday 😊. You know I am going to Google the hell out of this now 😆

Can I be nebby and ask what you know about growing mushrooms? I am just curious, I have always wanted to grow mushrooms and find the prosses fascinating although I have never done it myself 😊

I would use aquarium grade silicone if u need to plug holes. Non toxic, sturdy, washable, and removable. What I do for my sling starter containers for humidity control if needed. 🙂

No I use alcohol to disenfect
You'd be much better off using a glass container (like an aquarium with a single piece glass lid), & a 1:1 bleach/water solution. Plastic is prone to static charge, which will actually attract airborne spores, & alcohol (unless you're using something like reagent grade 2-propanol) isn't sufficient, & you're not TRULY sterilizing anything without the pressure & heat of an autoclave (or pressure cooker) which the container you're suggesting (& especially the hot glue patchwork) cannot withstand the rigors of.
Are you starting spores on agar? Oyster mushrooms are ridiculously resilient to competition once you've established a run of mycelium; you shouldn't need more than bleach water to clean a growing chamber...

...there are SOME mushrooms that need a little more consideration, though :watchingyou:

Last year, I turned an old upright freezer into a tarantula cabinet. I believe I originally got that idea from a mushroom message board.

What a unique idea for a viv ! Bet it looks so cool 😎

I take it you've grown mushrooms before? Have you heard of or used the blow up mushroom boxes? I saw one on a vid I was watching after reading this post the other day . The girl was growing what looked like chestnut mushroom in a blow up growing box the hole thing was clear with special plugs at the side that you could change depending on what stage the mycelium is at, would a box like that actually be able to work ? I assumed it wouldn't be able to be sterile after one use but the girl side just wipe it with alcohol and its good to go again. I will go bk on utube n see if I can find the upload. I love baby portobello mushrooms and would love to be able to grow my own.

Found it!

Would a larger version of her blowup box be viable for portobello? I know they take up alot of room compared to other sp of shroom.

I've never grown portobellos, but I know you harvest a pittance indoors compared to what you would out.
Instead of typing out a dissertation's worth of text, I'll refer you to a solid resource for growing just about any mushroom you want, & supplies.
Once you understand the parameters each stage of growth requires, the world's your oyster (haha, pun) with regards to containers & chambers & the like (kinda like Ts)...
So this guy Paul Stametes is a renowned mycologist, has written many books, & even teaches seminars in Oregon (recommended, if you've got the time...very fun, even if it's just a casual interest). He also runs a place called Fungi Perfecti (fungi.com) where you can source spores, mycelium, & anything needed for indoor or outdoor cultivation of mushrooms.

Enjoy
