So far i've kept millis, pedes and of course a large array of arachnids. But i've been eyeing something new that I haven't done before. Anyone have any ideas?

I've been eyeing mantids and beetle larvae, but I'm not really sure. Heck i've even been eyeing keeping a small culture of hydra heh.

Have you considered whipscorps? Vinegaroons?

Assassins (if you can find them...slightly illegal ;))

I could give you some tips on rearing wasps, if you'd like...ants, etc.

Roaches are tons of fun :)

I'm gonna be trying my hand at earwigs soon, too (hopefully).

What about true spiders?

It's hard to find cool stuff that's still legal :(
Whipscorpions would be my recomendation. I have two and they're really cool. They hide a lot but they're still babies. It's really neat to watch them and you can hold them if you're careful (they can be pretty fast when they want to be).

Ask me about my whipscorp/jumping spider collection.
heh.

Snails, oh how I'd love a giant snail above all. I've always wanted one of those giant slimy mollusks. The only problem is attaining one in the US is hard due to laws.

Mantids i've done before but attaining one of those can be a little hard this time of the year though.

Ants I was interested in for a while but finding a fertilized young queen in an urban area is rough. Sugar ant queens can be easily mistaken for fruit flies around here. Eventually I just gave up on finding one heh.

I like it all too! It's like I can't get enough of it. I jump around allot. Fish, herps, and arthropods. Never got into mammals though:? . Vinegarones are interesting to watch. Like a scorp with a mantis brain mix kind of bug. Something else you might think about is the giant silkworm moths. The caterpillars are HUGE:drool: . I bought cocoons from this site. The moths produced eggs. I watched the cats grow and turn into moths. But you should make sure you have a host plant for the caterpillar close by so you can get leaves for the cats. There is a parasitic fly around here so, not many of the big moth caterpillars can hide from those flies around here. I put some caterpillars outside and watched the flies attack the cats:evil: . I didn't know what was going on at first, then I figured it out. Parasitic things=(me) .

When did assasins become slightly illegal ? :? Sorry been out of the loop for a bit I was thinking of getting some too. Roaches are a ton a fun, and this is coming from recent roach phobe. They are interesting to watch and holding them is pretty interesting at times too.

Citheronia regalis is on this site.... in caccoons.

I. Hate. You.
I've wanted one of those cats since I was 12!
Sold out due to season.
/cry
(I also just remembered it's snowing outside.)

As for katydids, we have a TON of those at the lab I work in at my university. Along with a billion other assorted Orthopetra. Oh and roaches would get me swiftly removed from the apartment I'm living in with my girlfriend, along with a few threats on my genitals from her.

HA! Yea I didn't think about the 'season' thing. But something to look forward to in the Spring. I bought 10 Hissers today for a dollar each at an over supplied pet store today. But as much as I like bugs, genital security comes first!

edit: I remember what I did now. It was over 5 years ago when I bought the moths. Want to do it again. I bought cocoons in the winter and just put them in the fridge. Got eggs from those moths, raised the caterpillars in the Spring and Summer.

I've heard just recently that assassins and any foreign mantis species are illegal to keep in the US. I still see mantids sold quite a few places though so I'm not sure if that's true or not. According to this website: website mantids are ok but you need a permit for mealworms and crickets? Or only if they're not feeders? Or only for classroom instruction?

Hmm, they are allowed in Norway - Assassin bugs that is. Though they currently allow any type of insect, spider or scorpion here. But from what I hear, they will put an end to it soon. Damn government.

EC Let me know how the earwig breeding goes, I have tried with no luck, and we have some pretty big ones up here.

a bit off topic but I think its stupid to stop people from keeping certain pets. i guess if its things like large crocodilia or bloody black widows then fair enough. i just odnt see the point in banning harmless inverts. In briatain i dont think that happens. I just feel sorry for you U.S.A ers!:?

Assassin bugs are now illegal?

Sorry, to reiterate the question but the responses haven't entirely convinced me.

Personally, for me, it's going to be assassin bugs (?) and tiger beetles.
