OK my favorite Petstore that I go 2 every weekend has the cutest little spiderling. It is about the size of a quarter and has constructed an amazing web.

My questions are:

Is 25 dollars for a sling to much?

How fast do these grow?

What are the care requirments?

What is thier average behavior?

Thanks!

Don't know about the price. I'm from the wrong country. ;)

Growth - It depends a lot on three things: Gender, heat and food supply. A male Avic. avic. may grow to maturity in a year if the above are plentyful. It may take 3-4 years if you nearly starve it in cold conditions. This just to exemplify... Normally count on 2 years of growth on average for a male, longer for a female. They grow relatively fast compared to other Ts.

Recs: A cup with some height to it (they settle in the tops of cages rather than the bottom), later on a tank with "good" height. In any case the container always needs good ventilation!

Behaviour: Might get spooked, might shoot poop at you, if touched may try to rub urticating hairs from the abdomen into the object touching it. Otherwise quite calm and non-aggressive.

Avicularia (Pink Toes) are great "first" spiders. They are arboreal, meaning they live in trees. Your enclosure should have height, as CU said, and something to climb on, like cork bark. They need mositure and LOTS of ventilation. At that size a quart sized container should be fine. Browse the boards, you will find lots of information.
The are relatively "docile" but can have some skittish moments that will wake you up. It is my favorite Genus.
As for the price-see if you can get them both for $40.

Can someone tell me why they need LOTS of ventilation? I'm not trying to argue, just would like more information on why.

Spiders don't really breathe much air, and since lots of ventilation would get rid of the humidity, I don't see the pro. My avic slings are in 1qt mason jars with five 1/4" holes drilled in the top, and seem to be doing quite well.

As far as the price, it depends what YOU think is ok. The place mine came from charges $28 for an .5" avic versicolor sling, and then you have to pay shipping on top.

They need lots of ventilation because they need lots of humidity. Without the ventilation you get stagnant air, mold, mildew, etc.

I think it's more appropriate to say they need PROPER ventilation rather than just lots of it. Proper means cross ventilation. Holes in adjacant sides of the enclosure allow more air movement than holes just in the top. I'm not saying your slings are gonna die like that but it's possible they could be healthier in a better ventilated setup.

they are arboreal Ts, so in nature they have a combination of high humidity and good airflow since they live higher than the ground.

Well most pink toes go for around 15 from dealers. Shipping is atleast $20. So ... I'd say its alright for a sling.

One of the bad things about avics is as slings they tend to die for no reason at all..or maybe thats just all slings or just all my slings lol..

Both? I thought there was a single spiderling he was interested in?

$25 seems a little steep for a Pink Toe sling. I paid $20 for a 3-4". However, you have to factor in that, like Staley said, you are not paying shipping. Also, if it is a sling, it is probably Captive Bred, so that naturally ups the price a little. In the end, I guess its a fair deal. Just make sure to take good care of it, or you might end up with a dead $25.

When i typed that i put "2" instead of the word "to". Mabe the person was reading really fast and read "2" and thought "hmm... 2 spiderlings, each 25$. lets see if the store owner will bargain both of them down to 40$..."

Or something along those lines. Anyways i am not good at interpretting others thoughts;)

lol, has anybody tried asking a petstore where they get thier Ts? B/c i dont want to walk in there and boldly ask "Where do you get your Ts?" and they think i am questioning them in a way not ought to be questioned and get offensive

Well the way you ask it can make the difference ;) You can smile and politely say you're curious if their tarantulas come from breeders or are WC and await response. They're probably going to tell you they dont know and call the manager to ask him but most pet stores' stock here is wc. Don't know how it is over there though.

yea just ask em politely since ur 13..they wont hestitate to tell u.but then a gain due to ur young age, they might give u false info, but u should ask em to sell both for 35...i paid 10 for a 3 inch and i bought 2 of em..so include shipping it's still cheaper than 25 for a sling..and like most of the member have mention thta avic sling tend to drop dead for no reason ,so in mine opion ,u better off not buying the sling and wait till spring and have em ship priority to u for less and plus u can save more money and buy like 5-6 different spider and get em ship to u at 1 time.. that will worth the wait and better for ur pockets and collection wise....

I think it's pretty safe to assume that any relatively small sling is cb.

Yes, Kevmaster06, I misread the "2" meaning "to". Oh well, I'm old, I'm excused. Did you bring the T home yet?
