There are so many tarantulaspecies available for purchase but my favorites in my collection are the cheap and common classics.
I think there is often an urge to buy the new, rare and expensive but my own taste differs a bit.
Caribena versicolor
Ceratogyrus darlingi
Pterinochilus murinus
Heteroscodra maculata
these are such evergreens...
if i could only keep 4 those would be it.

Are you also drawn to the tried and true?
Which species is it and why?

(special mention to the "boring" nhandus - i love those guys)

If I could only keep one species the rest of my life it would be Caribena versicolor. Got 5 of them in the collection as we speak. It's a great animal to show people who have no idea about tarantulas, as many people think tarantulas are just big brown spiders. I love the coloration from slings to adults as well.

They are also so easy to take care of when you set them up right.

I don't find any of them boring. If I decide to expand, I've got my eye on Brachypelma emilia, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, Accanthoscuria geniculata, Cyriocosmus elegans, and Psalmopoeous irminia.

For me no tarantula is boring. Aphonopelma chalcodes I still adore even though it's tan and brown. It has desert colors, where some see a boring brown spider I see the sand and the dark rich brown Earth colors. A reflection of the colors of the 🏜.

Tliltocatl albopilosus are not high on many keeper's want list. I enjoy the dark brown and tan color variations on this T as well. It has special meaning to me as it's the first one I started with.

However for me the most beautiful tarantula is by far the Caribena versicolor. One of my most colorful T's I had and the most calm.

Only one other T that comes close would be the T. seladonia in vibrant color but in a tiny package.

How can I leave out my P. irminia, the jet black with orange abdomen, stunning. I love the orange Chevron markings on the legs.

These are my opinions only on what I find beautiful colorations. I could just take the easy-out and say all T's.

My all time favorite is Brachypelma albiceps
They're not talked about enough the colors are just amazing in my opinion and they're so sweet and not bad eaters from my experience I really enjoy keeping them.....they do grow insanely slow but I love the wait

Lasiodora parahybana, all the Lasiodora sp. really, i would have never thought i'd say that when i started but they are fantastic, calm giants

and Grammostola rosea (ex. porteri) hard to beat that one, it is the alpha and omega of the tarantula hobby really.

I think of the classics these 2 would be my top picks.

They are called 'classics' for a reason. I love Brachypelmas, Grammostolas (G. rosea being my favorite tarantula), and many more. They're beautiful species and have easy husbandry requirements. Plus, they are long lived. What's not to like? Here's Binx, my subadult female B. hamorii. The 'classic' tarantula species, and one of my favorites in my collection. IMG_20241228_212305159~2.jpg

I'm similar as well - pterinochilus murinus, hysterocrates gigas, brachypelma albiceps are some of my all time favorites.
Not too sure why, I think P.Murinus is almost a nostalgia thing, I've almost always had one since getting into the hobby. The gigas just have some interesting habits, love me some deep tunnels, lol.
Ceratogyrus are also really awesome as a whole, wouldn't be able to pinpoint down on just one.

"boring" nhandus
Unless you have kept a nhandu color, you have not truely had the full tarantula rainbow experience. Their bad rep is not true. Sure, they have horrible hairs and are kick in the neck ready. But if kept properly, you can actualy open the tank and take pictures.

i am going to get more.

My nhandu color confirmed Female, was bought unsexed. Traumatized from overseas shipping. A real kicker.

now that shes burrowed and at 4 inches (i got her at 2 inches in last march), shes a real little kitten. Litteraly. Clumsy, hungry most of the time, and ready to hide.

no more bald patches since i got her. And shes not in premolt, in dead winter.

she is always pink. Even when in the late stages. And the hairs are amazing. Its a fur ball.

i know what you meant. When you did the sarcastic “special mention to the “boring nhandus”. I doubt you think they are boring. They are understated because they need a special hand.

Nhandu genus is on my top 5 hands down. Coloratovillosus is the famous one, since chromatus became Vitalius, but few Ts are as impressive as a full grown female Nhandu tripepii, or the Brazilian Blonde Giant. Amazing species and, as underrated as it is, it’s still a classic.

Nhandu tripepii,
they are on my top ten bucket list. I believe.

that picture is calendar worthy. Who cares about hot girls on hot rods. This is mega hot spider.

hot girls are easy. Nhandu tripepii is deluxe. And way less expensive. But you need a delicate touch. That is art.

My Nhandu lady never kicked hair.
She is bonkers in her own way. Runs around like a boar when it is feeding time and is otherwise a mixture of slight curiosity and grumpiness while othertimes soothing Balu the Bear vibes.....and i love her to death.

Brachys, T. albo, T. vagans, and A. genics are definitely my favorite classics.
