This looks bad. It starts here, where will it spread?

When will these idiots stop? They have absolutely no right. Hey cars kill more people in the world than any animals, why are we allowed to own cars? Beer, look it up in the dictionary. It's a drug. Man-made Hullucination.

Ouch, so much for owning any huntsman spiders or scorps if this law passes
Thankfully I live in Ohio
Anyway you can petition this law?

It will be coming to Ohio eventually. The python ban has started a chain reaction, until every state has banned every animal ownable except for barking, crapping dogs.

Yup. This is awful. If anyone supports any kind of animal ban and believes that it won't affect our hobby one day is misguided. The anti-pet activist will not stop until ALL PETS are illegal.

What's really important for every individual in this hobby is to practice responsible and safe keeping of arachnids. Tarantulas aren't included on that list.....yet. All it will take is a single irresponsible individual who lets a Poecilotheria sp. get loose in his parents house and bite a small child (imagine the damage that would inflict, we are much too willing to call all tarantula venom non-life-threatening). Tarantulas will be directly in the limelight along with pythons and other large snakes. Every time I see a "what's the meanest T", "can I handle my pokiez", or "which tarentula haz the strongest poizonz?" thread I fear that these potentially dangerous spiders are getting into the wrong hands and the end result will be a permanent black mark on the entire hobby. The python hobby is under attack because some morons left their giant snake in an obviously insecure and entirely inappropriate enclosure in the same room as a small child. The exact same thing could happen with us.

I thought you guys lived in the "Land of the Free" ?

This is unfortunate, and I see the wildfire spreading to Canada one day.... Its an unfortunate reality that even though thousands of people have succesfully kept these critters without coming into harm, that all it takes is one dumb ass to ruin it for the rest of us... Maybe as a rule of thumb: Dont sell to dumbass'

It doesn't list Theraphosidae and I have no desire to own anything with life threatening venom.

But that's Illinois for ya, the only state that doesn't allow concealed carry of a firearm without a special permit. Thank god it doesn't apply to me!

Don't be so sure. "and any others that the Department, by
20 administrative rule, designates or deems medically
21 significant.
22 (19) Other animals that the Director, after consulting
23 with the Dangerous Animal Advisory Council, designates, by
24 administrative rule, as dangerous animals."

That sounds rather vague to me and could potentially come to include some of the OW species at the very least.

I was actually just talking to a local breeder friend of mine and we both agree that the likely scenario would be the S. cal and H.mac being added to that list. But honestly this hobby is so small in our state compared to others that the goal isn't to ban every animal with medically significant venom, but those which truly pose a danger.

sad... just sad and bad. I can't imagine adjusting to a life without my pet Ts. They've become so part of my daily/weekly routine.

Problem is that typically once they start banning things, they dont stop. I mean I can understand passing laws like in some states you have to have a permit to own venemous reptiles, but in reality there a people who still own venemous reptiles without the permits so heck all these laws really do is punish us law abiding citizens the idiots who don't care and are the ones to carelessly release these animals are still going to own them.

although on a side note, I do think that the tight wads in IL. need to lay up a little. Im a competative shooter and one of the national events that I go to every summer is in that state, and each year at this event is an RV that houses a well trained SWAT team. Apparently its the result of some law or something, but considering this is one of the largest shoots in the nation and most of us who go typically have gun, I don't think the SWAT team is an effective use of resources.
~end rant

If this gets passed I forsee many other states trying to enact this. According to the wording they can add any animal they feel like at any time. One bite by a pokie or h. maculata etc and it will only take one uninformed person to get all tarantulas on this list. Can you really see them taking the time to distinguish between the different species? Or caring for that matter?

I don't think tarantulas are a big issue and if they ban them then so be it. At least I still have my boy Blue (Russian Blue).

It's already spreading towards Canada in some forms and the UK too.
