I once lit one of these nests on fire.. it was an accident, long ugly story, and well, I ended up with multiple stings and a black swollen eye...
I think its chemical sprayer time.

Dear Dude:
You need no poison now. It is already autumn.Chilly nights have probably begun to slow them down; and the first hard frost will exterminate them.
After the first HARD frost has done its work it will be safe to convert the former hornets' nest into an indoor conversation piece.
A section of the branch it is on might mount it attractively.
A few (frost-killed AND fully dried) hornets might be exhibited with it.
Somewhat scary...but highly suitable for Halloween.
Somebody should pose beside it...in a bug suit!!!
