I have been tasked at work as the "bug guy" to get rid of this nest...... only trouble is I don't think I can do it without killing them to protect me. Anyone ever removed and re located a nest of these bad boys and lived to tell the tail? Or is it just not worth it and I should spray them down with liquid death?

just do it at night. But why do you need to kill them?
That is what I am asking, do you think I can get them moved without getting the holy heck stung out of me. They are super aggressive. The nest is about the size of a basketball. There has to be about 300 workers. I am not going to kill them if I can move them safely, but if I can't I don't have much choice they are in a high traffic area now and they have to go.

Ryan,
Those are bald faced hornets, and you are correct, they have a reputation as an aggressive and nasty species. I'm obviously no expert, but I don't believe you can relocate a nest of these. It's either let them be, or eliminate them altogether. Doing it at night might lessen the chances of you getting stung as much as you would during the day, but I would bet you still would get stung if you tried doing anything with the nest short of spraying it, no matter what time of the day.

Perhaps someone a little more knowlegable on wasps and hornets might want to pipe in? Waspman?

maybe you could quickly tape the entrance shut at night, cut the branch so it falls into a bag, and quickly drive to a place and untie the bag. theyll chew chew themeselves out eventually.

Ya I knew they were black hornets of some sort but that is about all I know about them, that and they can fly away with 1/4 of my hamburger in it's jaws. {D

Watch they chew out while I am driving. That would really suck.

I would just spray them. Attempting to safely relocate them could be more trouble than it's worth, especially if the nest breaks in your car.

If you *really* want to relocate them, wearing really thick clothes could help with the stings.

I've always wondered what would happen to a bald-faced hornet's nest if shot with a high powered rifle.

I once moved a bees nest...no where near as agressive, but this is my tale in short:

Borrowed a gas charged fire extinguisher (dont remember if CO2 or Nitrogen).
Bought tin garbage can with lid.
Blasted the heck out of the nest, with the garbage can underneath. This caught quite a few that fell directly. Branch pruner clipped the limb (thanks to a helpful hired hand).
Whole mess falls into can all the while with bursts from the extinguisher, lid slapped on and duct taped around edge.

Drove to far away field, dragging can into middle of blackberry huge patch.
Tied small nylon rope to lid handle, peeled off tape.
Walked out rope to the end, pulled. Lid comes off and can tips over.
I ran back quite a bit more. And then a little more. Far enough where I could barely discern dark dots swarming all around the can. Left it there.

The End! (Happy End, I hope).

Wow that's a crazy story! Sounded like it was kind of fun. I was one of those kids that would throw rocks at nests and run! Your story made me wonder if you could slip a garbage bag over the nest and transport it in the bag somehow. I usually leave nests but if they are in a bad spot, I use WD-40 ..on nests that are exposed.

Love the trash can, rope to lid idea.
If you're going to kill them anyway just spray them with thick soapy water-use one of those pressurized sprayers. This worked with a yellow-jacket nest I had to get rid of. They were super aggresive but I didn't get stung. At least the soap won't damage anything afterwards. Those chem sprays never leave the water table from which all the critters drink.

I,ve killed 4 nests the size of a basketball this summer. If you can approach the nest and find the entrance hole you need to spray them right into that hole keeping the can about 6 inches away and you must fire. The spray you use must have a powerful stream and must be able to kill them in under 10 seconds. Do not stop spraying once you start and bring a second can of spray with the lid off and ready to go. What ends up happening is the hornets try to rush out but die before they can push through the blast of your spray, then the bodies clog the exit and it's a peice of cake after that. allow the nest to sit over night and then tear into the next day with a long pole to check for survivors(sometimes none but sometimes up to 5). If you yell really loud just as you start to spray "For Sparta" it seems to help. good luck.

does it really?;) hahaha{D

the whole nest sounds like it could be a lot of fun, from torching and other methods of removal. as much as i would hate to do it, killing them all might have to be the way to do it, just b/c it's in a high traffic area.

they are beautiful hornets btw...:}

I'd go for a 12 gauge shot gun with #6 shot, pump or semi-automatic. Rifle might just poke holes in it.

I'd trash bag it in a heavy duty yard bag at night, and carry it off to wherever... but I'm not allergic, and I like 'em. Good luck bro.
