Just a theory. Wild caught dart frogs are no longer poisonous once they've been on fruit flies for a while. Maybe she got her animals mixed up?

Poisonous and venomous are 2 completely different things (although many think they are the same)

Poison is typically INGESTED (poison is often a defense)

Venom is typically INJECTED (venom must remain and keep being produced if that is how an animal is to incapacitate and break down its prey)

Ya think? That lady at the grocery store was confused. I'm trying to come up with an explanation.

Wasn't a direct reply to your post. More a general observation to the discussion. We are saying the same things and both trying to help those in the grocery store....and beyond ha ha

She told me a pink toe and she had it for a year but has not held it at all and when I asked her why
Good?

she said that she was told that if she was allergic to bees that she would then have a bad reaction to spider venom. So I had to politely explain that is not how tarantula venom works
How does bee venom cause an allergic reaction? Did you clarify if she had an anaphylactic reaction or just allergic reaction? Does she carry an epi pen? Do you know what hyaluronidase is? I don't, but I just googled and found it's in both bee and tarantula venom. Maybe my perspective is different, but I'm pretty sure I go could to jail if I give advice off the clock that kills someone.

Their venom is designed to liquify the insides of their prey.
The only thing I said afterwards was "you may wanna do some research on that spider. And explained that regardless spiders are meant to be display pets anyway"
Then why are you asking why she's not holding it? SHES THE PERFECT KEEPER.

How much are you paying these guys to keep quiet? 😂 Im sorry the irony here is so much.

She's the perfect keeper?!? Did you even read the whole story? In what universe is someone that knows nothing about an animal and just buys it on a whim because it was cheap and is waiting for her tarantula to no longer have venom the perfect keeper???

Good?

Also if you search- all sources say that tarantula venom is actually weaker than bee venom so there's no way it would have the same impact

Idk where you are getting your info or what hyaluronidase has to do with anything. Hyaluronidase is in numerous things including sperm and is used to break down collagen and is very beneficial for your body. Maybe you confused that with something else but it absolutely has no relevance to tarantula venom or supposedly being allergic to said venom especially when bee venom is proven to be more potent than tarantula venom. So the only irony really is the misinformation in your reply and believing that I'm giving medical advise that could kill a person. Not to mention I am a former EMT and was in the field for 4 yrs so....

Not an ignorant woman, just someone going by advice she's been given, probably by the many " experts " thet are around.

Maybe the ignorant one is the one that basis an opinion of someone on a couple of sentences !!!
How is buying an animal on whim just because it was cheap and then neglecting to do research on said animal and openly admitting to knowing nothing on said animal not ignorant??? Or did you miss that part of the conversation? It irks me to no end when people buy living things on a whim that they know nothing about and then are too lazy to do a simple Google search on proper care. That is the actual definition of ignorance. I'm willing to bet that anything I told that lady went in one ear and out the other

I generally don't mention my pets in the Walmart checkout line. Maybe she was hoping people would let her cut ahead.

This only works at certain "open 24 hours" establishments, & only if your pet is a gimp (on account of needing to be fed, & all)...

I overheard a person behind me in line at the grocery store today mention she had a spider. I didn't even bite my tongue, I leapt at the opportunity to ask her what kind of spider it was, and she replied it was a 'Pink Toe' that she had for a year but she had not handled it. When I inquired why she hadn't handled it before, she responded with "because it's still venomous." I was taken aback and confused but recollected myself and asked her to clarify what she had meant by "still venomous." She responded that "she was waiting on the spider to no longer be venomous." I had to educate this ignorant person that most spider species are ALWAYS venomous. It was for her own sake that I undertook this arduous endeavor. I explained to her that venom was created in a gland within the spider itself as a mechanism for survival. I explained that a spider might give what is called 'a dry bite' AKA a bite without venom, but that venom is how the spider incapacitates and digests its prey, so venom is ever present. She responded that someone had told her "if she was allergic to bees that she would then have a bad reaction to spider venom." I recognized this as incorrect so I abruptly explained the false correlation of bee venom and tarantula venom, I also mentioned the diversity of venom compounds and effects to exemplify my point that there are many different venoms and they don't all work the same to her. I complimented her practice of not handling her Tarantula and added a Tarantula would never aggressively bite a human. I also reassured her that Tarantula venom, while understudied, has not been proven to be fatal in humans. I explained that their venom was designed to incapacitate their prey and to liquefy it and we are much larger and different than their prey so the venom would not affect us in the same way. I informed her that there are many bite reports available online that describe the venom effects as "mild as a bee sting" and that may be where the information she heard came from. She then verbally confirmed for me that she did not know much about her Pink Toe Tarantula and she took it in on impulse as it was only $10. Recognizing her moment of weakness as my own, empathizing with this person--fully cognicent of my own behavior had I seen a beautiful Tarantula sitting in front of me for the measly price of 1 Caramel Mocha Soymilk Frappe--I metaphorically opened my arms in a wide embrace and told them all will be well for them and their little one. I said to them, "Hit these words into Google real quick... ARACHNO, BOARDS. They'll answer all your questions OR you could do your own research there." I gave them a thumbs up and said "See you later!"
She seemed dismissive as it was a lot of information to take in from a stranger rambling on about Tarantula venom at the grocery store but I had a feeling I would be lurking in wait later in a Pink Toe Thread for Viper to tell them to do their research.
I turned back around with a smirk on my face and the cashier had this annoyed look on their face.

Then I came here to tell everybody about it

Buying all kinds of pets on a whim has been going on longer than you have been on the planet, and will continue to do so and your ranting won't change a thing.

Also , I would rather take my chances from a bee sting rather than a large mature Pokie, regardless of your " research "

I'm sorry my ranting seemed to have affected you for some reason. And just because buying animals on a whim happens all the time doesn't make it right and doesn't mean we should stop trying to educate people on proper care. But please go on about how I offended you somehow

Also why in the world would you compare a pokie to a pink toe tarantula??
